You can connect a TV to a computer instead of a monitor

Wired connection

This is the most stable and simplest option. It does not require any specific settings and works great as is. You can connect a TV to a computer instead of a monitor in several ways: via DVI, VGA, HDMI or DisplayPort.

HDMI / DisplayPort

The HDMI interface is used to connect media players, game consoles and other equipment. The HDMI port can transmit high-quality, high-definition video, coupled with an audio track, and with almost perfect response.

DisplayPort is the next generation of interfaces developed by VESA. For connection to the system unit, this is an ideal option that meets all modern technological trends. Both interfaces are quite common, especially HDMI. DisplayPort is found only on new technology, so not every TV can be connected to a laptop or PC video card.

How to connect TV to PC via HDMI or DisplayPort:

  • We insert the plug into the TV on one side and into the video output on the PC on the other side (video card, laptop port).
  • Call the technical menu on the remote control by pressing the Input button (a similar action can be performed through the TV settings).
  • Select HDMI or DisplayPort as the main signal source.
  • It takes a few seconds for the technician to accept the connection, after which the PC screen switches to the TV screen.

Sometimes it may take longer to sync. It depends on the TV firmware and the video card of the computer. If the picture is displayed incorrectly, then you should configure the parameters on the PC.

  • Call the context menu by right-clicking on the desktop.
  • Selecting “Screen Options”.
  • In the section “Multiple displays” we set the nominal resolution of the TV.

Here, in the additional parameters, you can adjust the screen refresh rate and set other presets. If the TV is not defined as a second monitor, then you need to press the “Find” button.

Synchronization features

This tandem has its pros and cons. Among the obvious advantages, first of all, we can single out the screen diagonal. For average monitors, this figure ranges from 17-24 “, while for TVs. in the region of 30-40”.

It is much more convenient to work with multimedia content, documents and play games on a large TV screen. But this approach has its drawbacks. In a good half of the cases, TV equipment is devoid of any adjustments, that is, it is static. and that’s it. Whereas the position of the monitor can be changed. vertically and / or horizontally.

In addition, the TV is much heavier than a computer monitor, as well as larger. Using the TV as a monitor requires more desktop space. A device with a diagonal of 30 inches must be located more than 50 cm from the user’s eyes, otherwise he will not be able to capture everything that is happening on the screen. Not all computer desks meet these criteria.

There are two ways to connect the equipment. by cable and by means of wireless protocols. Let’s analyze them in more detail.

Sound problems

When connecting a TV as a monitor, the sound may sometimes not be output. Here you also need to perform a number of actions on a personal computer.

  • Right-click on the speaker icon at the bottom of the interface.
  • We find the item “Playback Devices”.
  • In the list provided, in addition to PC speakers, there must be a TV model.
  • Select TV with the right mouse button and click on “Use as default”.
  • We save the changes by clicking on the OK button.

Wireless connection

You can also connect your phone to a TV via WI-FI or via a local network using a DLNA server. The ideal option is to adopt Miracast or WiDi (Wireless Display) technology: there is no fundamental difference between them. For the latter to work correctly, you need a Smart TV and PC format on the Windows 8 or higher platform. The equipment must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Connecting TV to PC via Miracast or WiDi:

  • Open the “Network” item in the TV settings.
  • Click on the line Miracast / Intel’s WiDi.
  • Move the slider to the on position.
  • Download and install Intel Wireless Display drivers on the PC (freely available).
  • In the settings of the utility, select “Devices” and “Detect”.
  • Click on the TV model and wait for the end of the synchronization.

You can connect your TV to your computer via a DLNA server. There are more than enough special utilities for organizing the latter on the Web. The Home Media Server program has proven itself especially well. Let’s consider synchronization using its example.

Connecting TV to PC via DLNA Server:

  • Installing the utility on a PC.
  • We go into the settings and click on the item “Devices”.
  • Start searching for equipment for synchronization.
  • Choose a TV model from the list that appears.
  • Go to the section “Media resources”.
  • Click on the “Add” button and designate all disks or individual folders that will have access to the TV.
  • We save the changes by clicking “Apply”.
  • On the main screen of the program, open the appeared media server and click on the “Start” button.
  • On the TV, we select the LAN protocol as the signal source, after having connected the cable from the TV to the corresponding connector on the PC.
  • Now all playable content on a PC from the above discs or folders will be broadcast on TV.

We use the TV as a monitor for the computer

Today’s TV technology works perfectly in tandem with other modern devices, including a PC. You can safely use your TV as a computer monitor. It remains only to figure out how to properly connect and configure it. Many beginners have serious problems with this procedure.

connect, computer, instead, monitor

DVI / VGA

Ports have long lost their relevance, and you can find them on old equipment. The VGA interface transmits only an analog signal, while the DVI port can also work with digital broadcasting. The capabilities of the latter are indicated by the corresponding prefix:

  • DVI-I is a universal option;
  • DVI-D. digital broadcast only;
  • DVI-A. analog only.

If your TV has a DVI port, and your computer has VGA, or vice versa, you can use an adapter.

  • We insert the video plugs into the corresponding interfaces.
  • We connect the audio cable to the Audio-In port.
  • In the TV menu, set DVI or VGA (sometimes D-Sub) as a signal source.

If necessary, adjust the image on the PC according to the instructions above.

What cable is needed to connect a computer to a TV or second monitor?

The most common connectors on laptops and desktops for connecting a computer to an additional display are:

  • VGA (transfers video only)
  • DVI (transfers video only)
  • DisplayPort (transmits video, usually transmits audio)
  • HDMI (carries both video and audio)

Here’s what these connectors look like on computers, monitors, or televisions:

The most popular connectors for connecting a computer to a monitor or TV

If both the computer and the monitor (or TV) have one of these connectors (both the computer and the monitor have the same connectors), you only need the appropriate cable (VGA, HDMI, DVI, or DisplayPort cable) to connect the computer to the second monitor.

If your computer and TV (or monitor) have the above connections, but they are different, you can probably also connect only those you need an adapter:

A more complicated situation arises if the computer has only a VGA connection, and a monitor or TV has only an HDMI connection. Then a simple adapter cannot be found and in many cases it can be difficult to connect from one connector to another. this requires an expensive and complex adapter.

We connect a second monitor or TV to a computer and laptop

Working on a computer with several windows open at the same time is not very convenient. Especially if you are using a laptop with a small screen for work. However, it’s easy to simplify your work by simply connecting a second monitor to your computer and you can conveniently place the windows you need on both screens.

A second monitor or TV can be connected to almost any laptop or desktop computer, and it’s easy to do. Here’s a quick guide on how to do it.

What needs to be installed on a TV or monitor when connected to a computer?

To view images from a computer when connecting a TV to a computer, you must select the appropriate source (input) in the list of TV video sources. Usually the source name is the same as the connection name (for example, HDMI source). The same should be done on the monitor if it does not start to automatically display the image.

Video source selection button on the TV remote

In most cases, as soon as you connect a second monitor or TV to your desktop or laptop, your computer will immediately “know” what to do with it and start displaying an image on it. However, even if an image is displayed, you may need to select how images are displayed on screens.

To allow your Windows 10 computer to manage display settings, in an empty area of the desktop, right-click and select Display Settings from the pop-up menu

In the settings window that opens, the most important are the following three sections (marked with numbers in the figure):

  • 1. If two screens appear in the picture, it means that the computer has already registered the second monitor or TV. Number 1 is usually marked on the main screen (e.g. laptop).

If the second screen is on the first one on the right, you can use the mouse to move the screen shown in the figure from left to right.

If the second screen is located above the first, then the second screen in the image can be moved with the mouse above.

Since there is no inconvenience when moving the mouse from one screen to another, the mouse pointer or cursor will not appear on the side you expected.

  • 2. If you are not sure which screen is marked with number 1 and which is marked with number 2, press the “Identify” button, the display will show the number.
  • 3. On multiple displays, you can choose what you want to see on each of the screens:
  • Selecting Duplicate These Displays will display the same image on both screens.
  • Selecting Expand These Displays will display a different image on both screens. For example, you can open one document or application on one screen and another on another. You can drag each window from one screen to another using your mouse just like you drag a window on one screen from one location to another.
  • If you select Show for 1 only, the image is only displayed on screen number 1.
  • If you select Show 2 only, the image will only be displayed on screen number 2.

When you disconnect the second monitor or TV from the computer, all windows will automatically return to the first monitor. And then reconnecting the second monitor will automatically enable the options you selected when you used multiple monitors at the same time. Thus, you do not need to adjust or remember the same settings every time.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of using a TV instead of a monitor come from the larger size of the former. Watching a movie or playing your favorite game on a 48-inch TV is much more convenient, not to mention larger models. Even 32 inches will look better than the usual 19.

  • A large TV is completely uncomfortable for work.
  • A TV with a good resolution and matrix is much more expensive than a monitor. Resolutions below FullHD will not give a clear picture.
  • The often low frame rate limits monitor use for gamers.

It is best to use a TV in conjunction with a monitor, gaining the dignity of each.

Is it possible to?

There is a possibility to connect a TV. The only question is the available connectors on the computer and screen. You just need to get the appropriate cable. An adapter may be required.

There are two scenarios for using a computer together with a monitor. First. to display the image, which is available even for older models with a picture tube. And second. this is use as a storage device. Works only with modern TVs with their own player.

Note that the TV can be used instead of a monitor, as well as in conjunction with it. Video card manufacturers equip devices with multiple connectors for connecting two or more screens. If the video card is budgetary and the number of connectors is limited, but the processor has an integrated video card, you can connect to the motherboard.

DisplayPort

It is a direct competitor for HDMI. Allows you to daisy chain a large number of monitors. For this reason, high-performance video cards are equipped with them, for example, some contain up to 6 such ports. The procedure and features of connection do not differ from HDMI.

The only difficulty with this input is that video cards are equipped with them, but they are not so common on monitors and TVs. This is worth paying attention to.

Through this port, you can transfer video in two ways: using a computer as a storage device, in conjunction with a player on a TV, or with a DisplayLink adapter. The latter is only suitable for USB 3.0 as 2.0 lacks bandwidth.

This method has no advantages over those described above, requires an expensive adapter, and is mentioned as an alternative.

How to connect a TV instead of a monitor: step by step instructions

Computer monitors are best suited for work, and special models with high frequency are used by esports athletes. However, their resolution is limited, which often leads to the question of connecting a TV. Watching a movie or playing your favorite game on the big screen is much more comfortable. Let’s take a closer look at whether it is possible to connect a TV instead of a computer monitor and how to do it.

What to connect through?

There are a wide variety of methods and connectors for connecting a TV instead of a monitor. However, many of them are outdated: they are no longer present on modern and relatively modern computers and televisions. Of the most common, the following can be distinguished:

  • VGA;
  • DVI;
  • HDMI;
  • DisplayPort.

Let’s take a closer look at the connection features for each.

This is a legacy analog signal. It can no longer be found on modern video cards, as well as on motherboards. However, it still appears frequently on TVs, monitors and systems manufactured prior to 2015. Capable of providing a picture with FullHD resolution.

To connect to a computer, we use a VGA-VGA cable. Has compatibility with DVI, for which you just need an adapter. However, purely digital DVI-D and HDMI require an active adapter. It is much more expensive, has a limitation in image quality and resolution, as in VGA, but you can use.

After connecting, if the TV does not automatically display a picture from the computer, you will need to select source. On the remote, this menu usually corresponds to the input or source button. Then it remains only to adjust the screen resolution.

Analog types DVI are connected in the same way as VGA and have similar characteristics. The digital version has the best characteristics and is capable of giving a resolution of up to 2K. Not found on all devices, as manufacturers prefer HDMI. Compatible with analog inputs only through a special adapter.

This is a modern connector that receives and transmits a digital signal. With analog, for example, VGA, it works only through an active adapter that converts the signal.

It is often found even on older devices. Capable of high-quality transmission not only video, but also sound. Allows you to connect a TV instead of a monitor. Supports 4K resolution. Image quality is considered the best.

To connect, you need an HDMI to HDMI cable. It is also possible to use mini-HDMI. This is just a smaller version, most often installed on mobile devices. An adapter can be used.

It is worth noting that even inexpensive Chinese cables are capable of giving a juicy and high-quality image. However, if the filter is of poor quality, interference may be caught. If they are noticed after connecting, most likely, the matter is in the cable and you should not sin on the screen or system.

Important! Unplug both the computer and the TV before connecting. Never plug or unplug a cable from a working device. In such cases, the entrance often burns out.

After connecting on the TV, select the signal source, adjust the image and enjoy the picture. If you cannot set the required resolution, update or install the driver for the video card.

Using two screens

There are two scenarios for using screens. The first is duplication. The same image is displayed immediately both on the monitor and on the screen. In this case, the second device, if it is not the main one at the moment, just turn off.

Secondly, use one screen as a continuation of the second. The images on them will be different, depending on what is placed on them. This gives you an enlarged desktop with two separate zones that can nevertheless be linked. Note that it is possible to use two screens at once independently of each other, as if they were connected to different computers. However, the setup process is very time consuming and requires a powerful processor.

Setting up your TV is easy. On the desktop, right-click and select “Screen Resolution”. Below we will see the item “Multiple screens”. Click on it and select the required scenario for using the monitor.

We now know if a TV can be used instead of a monitor. It is possible, and it is easy and simple to do it. All you have to do is plug it in through the available connector and set it up just like a monitor. By using both screens in tandem, you can reap the benefits of each while removing their respective limitations and disadvantages.

Wi-Fi

You can connect to a TV and use it as a monitor via a wireless WI-FI network. To do this, your box must support Miracast and Intel WiDi technology. You will need to install a special program on your computer. The technology has its pros and cons, as well as some hemorrhoids to customize. I still recommend using an HDMI cable. But if you want to connect via Wi-Fi. read this instruction from my colleague.

Ports and possible connections

You need to look at all the inputs and ports on your TV set. To do this, turn it towards the forest of backs, and towards you in front, so that you can see everything exactly. Now you see a number of all kinds of connections, but now we will disassemble exactly the cables that can be used to connect a computer or laptop.

Now also take a quick look at your video output on your computer or laptop. As you can see, there are much less of them here, but you should not worry, since we will build on the ports on the TV first of all.

The best option is HDMI, since it transfers not only video, but also sound. Therefore, if you have such a port on your TV set, then we take it into account.

If your computer or laptop does not have HDMI ports, then you can take an HDMI to DVI adapter. There are both fixed and wired adapters as in the picture below.

VGA or otherwise D-sub can also be tried as a great option for connection. The transmission in this case will be analogous, if you transfer the image to a large TV with a widescreen image, then the quality will probably be worse.

DVI is a more advanced connection than VGA, but can handle both digital (DVI-D) and analog (DVI-A) signals. There are also cables that can work with two transmission standards at once. DVI-I. You can also use adapters from DVI to VGA, depending on what ports you have on the TV and on the computer.

RCA. or bells. They are rarely used and then, on old zombie boxes, but the method itself is working. True, the transmission will only go on an analog signal. And I only met adapters with RCA to VGA.

SCART. found only on very old TVs, there is also an analog transmission. To connect a computer or laptop, take an adapter to VGA.

And one more important point, if you will be using a non-HDMI cable, then you need to additionally connect the sound from your sound card. For this you can use bells and output to Mini-Jack.

You need to connect it to the headphone or speaker port. there is no difference. If you have a separate sound card, you can also connect via tulips or fiber.

Connection

Now we got to the question. how to connect a TV to a computer. I’ll show you using an example of connecting via HDMI. But you use any of the adapters or cables I noted above. It is best to use a direct connection without an adapter: VGA. VGA, DVI. DVI, HDMI. HDMI (without intermediaries).

  • You need to connect the cable to the desired input. Also, see that there is a signature “IN”, which means “Input”, and not “Output” (OUT), that is, we will send a signal from the computer to the screen, and it will receive it;
  • Turn on the TV and click on the button that will display all connections;
  • Select the desired port on the TV set to which you are connected. If you forgot which one. look at the input panel and remember the port number;
  • Find the “Win” and “P” keys on the keyboard and press them at the same time. Now select the type of data transfer. If you will use the TV as a second computer monitor, then it is best to use “Duplication” or “Projector”.

How to connect a TV to a computer instead of a monitor

Hello everybody! A rather interesting question came to my mail: “How to connect a TV instead of a monitor?” So I decided to write a short but detailed enough article for beginners. First of all, you need to look at what ports we have on the box. And already from them we will build on the connection. I will also give some advice along the way.

READ  How to watch a movie from your phone on TV

No picture or sound

Try disconnecting everything from the TV except your computer or laptop. This applies to USB flash drives, set-top boxes and everything else. I also advise you to update the drivers for the video cards that you have on your PC. It should be borne in mind that when transmitting a digital signal from a computer, some analog ports will not be able to receive it, so try a different port to connect to the TV screen. I also wrote a separate instruction for solving connection problems, and you can read it here.

How to connect a TV to a computer instead of a monitor?

If you connect a regular TV to your computer instead of a monitor, you will be able to watch your favorite films and TV shows on a large screen, which significantly improves the quality of the picture. The connection of two devices does not cause any particular difficulties and is carried out in several ways without the involvement of a specialist.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before connecting a TV to a computer instead of a monitor, you need to understand all the advantages and disadvantages of both options. Objectively, monitors are much more convenient than screens, even with the widest possible diagonal. In TVs, it is impossible to adjust either the height or the angle of inclination, unlike computers. A special bracket corrects the situation a little, but this design requires enough free space, which may not be in the room. In addition, even the smallest TV has a lot of weight and outstanding dimensions, so you simply won’t be able to put it on a compact computer desk.

There should be a gap of 50 centimeters from a computer screen to a working person, but in a situation with a TV screen with a diagonal of more than 30 inches, this distance has to be increased due to the impossibility of simultaneously covering the entire area with a glance. This rule, again, is not always possible in small spaces. If the TV is used for games, the constant movement of the gaze from one point to another greatly tires the eyes.

It is impossible not to mention Input Lag. a delay in signal processing that occurs when using a TV as a monitor. This is especially noticeable when connecting computer and online games, and therefore their fans need to pay attention to this parameter. Input Lag, measured in milliseconds, should not exceed 40. By the way, the pixel response time in modern models does not play a special role.

If we talk about the unambiguous advantages of the TV in relation to the computer screen, then we are talking about a better picture. TV wins in such aspects as color palette, functionality, customization and refresh rate. The TV can be simultaneously connected to both the computer and the antenna. The modes will change by simply pressing the button in a couple of seconds.

In addition, the presence of good speakers is a clear advantage.

Which TV to choose?

To choose a TV instead of a monitor, you need to make sure that it provides the proper picture quality and that the available backlight is LED. Since plasma panels are rapidly losing their popularity due to their short lifespan, LCD displays should be preferred. Liquid crystal matrices will provide a high screen resolution, which, in turn, will significantly improve the picture quality. In addition, they usually provide FullHD support and have a convenient and understandable menu. A wireless monitor that can connect to a network using Wi-Fi is a good choice.

Samsung UE50NU7470U is considered one of the most successful options for games. Despite the fact that the rather large screen has a diagonal of 49.5 inches, the process of using it is very comfortable. The device can connect to a computer in several ways, including by connecting a Wi-Fi and a LAN cable. Dynamic Crystal Color technology and 4K resolution ensure vivid and detailed images. Such a TV weighs quite a bit. about 13 kilograms.

A good option for both gaming and viewing is the Toshiba 32L5780EC TV. Responsible for the image quality is a diagonal of 32 inches, as well as a screen resolution of 1366 × 768. Convenience of connection is provided by 2 connectors for an HDMI cable, as well as 2 USB ports. The viewing angle reaches 178 degrees, and LED-backlighting and LEDs on the sides are responsible for the absence of glare at the edges. Other advantages of the model include high-quality sound, child protection and sleep timer.

LG 43LK5100PLB TV has a diagonal of 43 inches and a resolution of 1920 by 1080. Full HD function creates the effect of complete immersion in what is happening on the screen. The TV can be easily connected both to the PC system unit and to a specialized game console. High-quality sound is provided by the Virtual Surround system. over, there is a special screen coating available that protects against glare.

Another suitable TV is the Samsung UE40NU7170UXRU, which measures 49 inches. The screen can be connected to the system unit in several ways, moreover, the device has a built-in PlugPlay function.

It will be possible to control this TV not only with a regular remote control, but even with a smartphone.

Step-by-step instructions for connecting

In order to turn your TV into a computer screen, you should start by purchasing the optimal model. For frequent and varied use, it is better to use a model with a diagonal from 26 to 27 inches, as well as a resolution ranging from 1920×1080 to 2560×1440. There are several ways to make “transformation”, both wired and wireless. If you have a cable, the TV is combined with the system unit via VGA, DVI or HDMI. The wireless method is to create a local area network or direct Wi-Fi connection. It is also possible to use special adapters.

It is quite common to choose a connection using an HDMI cable, which allows you to create a high quality video signal and clear sound. For its implementation, it is necessary that the corresponding connector is present both on the TV and on the PC video card. When the first plug of the cable is inserted into the computer connector, and the second into the TV port, press the Input button on the remote control, and then activate HDMI as the main source. If everything is done correctly, the screen will blink a little, and then the desktop of the connected computer will appear on it. In case of any display errors, you will need to adjust the desktop accordingly.

To do this, just right-click on any empty fragment of the desktop, wait for the menu to appear and follow the “Properties. Parameters” chain. Pressing the “Advanced” button will allow you to select the required resolution. as a rule, the maximum is set. The “Screen Settings” tab allows you to make the TV screen the main one, and the computer screen an additional one. If the TV does not transmit sounds, you will need to right-click on the speaker image in the notification bar. Going to the “Playback device” menu, then you will have to select your TV in the list of connected devices, then right-click on it and confirm “Use as default”.

Connection via VGA and DVI “Tulips” is carried out according to a similar scheme. To create a VGA connection, you need an appropriate cable. Typically, the first end of the cord is inserted into the corresponding connector on the graphics card and the other into the port on the TV. You can also use a DVI-VGA cable if there is a need to simultaneously connect a regular monitor and a TV to the system unit. A larger computer is more convenient to connect using a DVI cable, which can provide high quality transmission.

It should be added that in addition to the VGA or DVI cable, you will need to purchase a special audio cable equipped with a standard 3.5 plug.

After plugging the ends of the cable into the appropriate jacks on your TV and computer, and plugging the audio cable into the output marked “Audio-In”, you need to turn on the computer and the TV. In the TV menu, VGA or DVI is selected as the main signal source. This can be done by pressing the Input button on the remote control.

The TV, originally equipped with a Wi-Fi module, can even be connected to a smartphone. Therefore, the easiest way is to connect both a personal computer and the TV itself to the home network using a router. If the TV does not have a built-in module, then an additional purchase of an adapter is required. However, you can sync both devices without it, thanks to Intel WiDi and Miracast technologies. For a successful WiDi connection, the PC must have an OS older than Windows 7 and the Intel Wireless Display program downloaded. Modern models, however, are most often sold with built-in Miracast support.

First of all, the required technology is activated on the TV. either WiDi or Miracast. Usually this function is initially enabled, but if not, then you will need to use the “Screen Mirroring” function. Further, in the case of WiDi, the Intel Wirelles Display utility is installed on the computer. Having opened it, you should run the “Wireless Monitor” command, which allows you to create a connection.

During the connection, the program will also require you to dial the security code, which will appear on the TV monitor. If we are talking about Miracast, then the Charms bar will need to be displayed on the desktop. Going to the “Devices” section, you must click on “Projector”, then run the “Add wireless display” function.

Connecting your computer and TV over a local area network will require special software. First of all, the user will need to download and configure the DLNA server, which can be done using a licensed program called “Home Media Server”. After installing the software, you need to change some of the settings, and connect the TV itself to the system unit using a LAN cable.

It is better to turn off the TV before starting the setup.

Then the software starts up on the computer. Having opened the “Settings” section, you need to go to the “Devices” tab, and then start the search by clicking on the button. After completing the scan, the program will show all available devices, from the list of which you need to find your TV. Clicking on its model name will confirm the connection to the media server. Next, the user will need to reopen the “Settings” item and go to the “Media resources” section.

Clicking on the “Add” button and selecting the required folders on the hard drive will create access to them from the TV side. The easiest way to do this is to select all local drives in the My Computer folder. When all the required files are available for viewing on the TV screen, you can start scanning by pressing the “OK” button.

The configuration process ends by opening a media server, for which it will be enough to click on the “Start” button located in the main menu of this program.

READ  Where are iPhone backups on computer

It is important to add that it is best to disconnect both devices before creating a security connection. Only after the cables are inserted can you start the TV and select the connection mode using the Source or Input button. The connector selected on the remote control must match the connector to which the wire is connected. The cable type is determined by which connectors and ports are located on the back of the computer. Having determined further the type of connectors in the TV, it will be possible to understand what kind of cable is required. Marking the input signal on the TV will allow you to correctly configure this unit.

To adjust the image on the TV screen, you can try pressing the Display key. This key is quite often activated by additional pressing of the Fn key. In addition, sometimes the word Display itself is missing, and a corresponding image is present instead. In Windows 7, pressing the WindowsP combination opens the Project menu. This section allows you to select the required display mode for the contents of the desktop. In addition, in any version, you can right-click on a free area of the desktop and call the menu “Screen Resolution” or “Properties”.

The “Multiple Displays” section allows you to choose how the images will look on the TV screen.

For information on how to connect a TV to a computer instead of a monitor, see the following video.

You can connect a TV to a computer instead of a monitor

In today’s article, we decided to describe the process of connecting a TV to a computer. Agree, it is much more convenient to watch videos and games on a large TV screen. over, modern video cards are equipped with a special output for this. In addition, it would be no less practical to use an additional monitor. Especially when working with a laptop. So, in this article we will talk in detail about how to connect a TV or a second monitor to a computer, in what sequence and what changes need to be made in the settings of the video card.

First, let’s take a quick look at what common outputs on a computer video card can be found today:

D-sub (better known as VGA). The type of the transmitted signal is analog. This interface has practically lost its position in the market. However, for compatibility with the old type of monitors, many video cards are still equipped with such a connector. With the advent of digital television, he began not to meet the necessary parameters and instead of him, new types of signal transmission have long been invented.

DVI. The first digital video interface. Thanks to it, the quality of the transmitted image is an order of magnitude higher than that of VGA. But it still has certain limitations today, namely, the lack of support for very high screen resolutions and the ability to transmit only a video signal.

HDMI. Modern digital video interface with which it became possible to simultaneously transmit high quality video and audio signals at ultra high screen resolutions.

In this article, we will demonstrate how to connect a TV to a computer via the HDMI interface. Why? Let’s explain now. Of course, older computers may not have HDMI output. It is also possible to connect via other interfaces. But then a number of nuances arise. First, you won’t be able to enjoy high image quality at high resolutions, let alone 3D. Secondly, the connection process is complicated by technical restrictions, namely: VGA and DVI can only transmit a video signal (although there are rare exceptions when DVI supports audio), so an additional wire will be needed to connect audio connectors between the TV and the computer, which is more likely in total, it will periodically create an out-of-sync between picture and sound. Despite the fact that there are adapters from HDMI to DVI and vice versa, the quality when using those is also significantly reduced. And the last reason why we deliberately decided not to give examples of connecting through outdated interfaces is that today it is simply not relevant anymore, because all modern technology has long been equipped with a digital high-quality HDMI interface.

So, first, make sure you have the right connectors on your computer and TV.

In our case, a Samsung TV purchased a few years ago and by today’s standards is not the best, but it has two HDMI inputs.

If you have a stationary computer, then on the back of the system unit on the video card, also make sure that there is an HDMI connector

On a laptop, it is usually located on the left

HDMI cable was included with the TV.

Now we go directly to the very connection of the computer to the TV.

Connect one end of the cable to the HDMI 2 socket on the TV

And the other to HDMI input on a computer or laptop

Turn on your computer and TV. In this case, the TV must be switched to AVI mode.

Most likely, at first you will see an inscription informing that the cable is not connected or there is no signal.

It is necessary to open the menu on the TV, where a list of signal sources is displayed. As a rule, in order to call it on the remote control there is a special button “Source”. Here it looks like this:

While in this menu, select HDMI 2 as a signal source. we connected the cable to the HDMI connector with number 2 and press the confirm button

Now everything on the computer desktop will also be displayed identically on the TV screen.

However, it may also happen that the image is still not available or you want to change the screen resolution. Then right-click on any free part of the desktop and select “Screen Resolution” from the pop-up context menu. The settings window will open.

If the connected TV is not detected automatically, then press the “Find” button and wait until the end of the TV search.

In the screen item select “Multiple monitors”.

The resolution, as a rule, is set automatically, but if necessary, you can experiment with this parameter.

And the last item we need is “Multiple Screens”. Set it to “Duplicate desktop on 1 and 2” or “Duplicate screens”.

Click “Apply” and “Ok”. After that, what you see on the computer monitor will appear on the TV screen.

If no sound is coming from the TV speakers, there are a number of steps that need to be taken.

Right click on the audio tray icon

And in the pop-up window select “Playback Devices”

To mute the sound from computer speakers, turn off its audio device (usually Realtek) and speakers by right-clicking on the corresponding items and selecting “Disable”.

And in order to send the sound to the TV speakers, select it in the devices and click “Enable”

Then click “Apply” and “Ok”. That’s all.

There are, of course, disadvantages:

  • At first, it is quite difficult to get used to this screen size. I literally had to turn my head to look from one corner to another. Fortunately, you quickly get used to the size.
  • For surfing the Internet, a screen of this size is not very convenient. Most sites are optimized for standard definition and look odd and clumsy on a large monitor.
  • If you are a professional graphics processor, a large screen has undoubted advantages for you, but in this case you still have to buy a monitor, not a TV, since the latter is not able to provide the image clarity necessary for your fine work. But this does not mean that the picture on the TV screen will be blurry, a person with an unprofessional look, most likely, will not notice absolutely any differences.
  • If you are going to spend a lot of time sitting in front of the TV reading or writing texts, you need to carefully adjust the image, since by default the TV is still designed for watching video and if you do not dim the colors and brightness, your eyes will get tired very quickly.

TV instead of a monitor. Is it possible and why is it needed?

Until recently, I had a simple but very stylish 17-inch monitor on my desktop. In principle, it suited me in many respects, but due to its small size in some situations it was not very convenient. Therefore, I have long dreamed of a large monitor, or rather a large LCD TV instead of a monitor. And finally my husband gave me a 32-inch FullHD LG TV.

Now I would like to share my impressions of the purchase to those who are still thinking. whether to use a TV instead of a monitor, it was easier to decide.

First, I’ll tell you about the pros:

  • First of all, of course, it should be said about the size. After the usual 17 inches, such a huge screen just threw me in awe and admiration. Also, I really like the way the TV looks on the table.
  • Now about what all this was started for: games and films. I don’t think it’s even worth explaining why a large monitor is better for entertainment than a small one. The realism of modern games already deserves all praise, and on the big screen, the immersion effect is amplified many times over. Watching movies has now become a real pleasure too. Good speakers and a large enough TV screen make us feel as good as in a movie theater.
  • My husband and I practically do not watch ordinary television, although the antenna cable was nevertheless connected to the new TV, and this is another plus. instead of two devices, we now use one. This is great if you need to save space in the room. And switching between monitor and TV mode is very easy, just click the remote control a couple of times.
  • I also discovered one more convenient feature for myself. you can read the text on the screen from a few meters away. For me, as a lover of e-books, this property is very attractive. You can read books lying on the sofa in a comfortable position, and your eyes will not get tired.

For Vladimir. did not understand where does TV and eye microsurgery have to do with it. there are people who have been watching TV all their lives and have normal eyes. For Alexander. where does 3D and video card crashes? If the instructions for the TV say that it is possible to connect to a PC, then you just need to have straight hands and everything will be ok!
