Working with video sources
Cinema modes were tested when connected to a Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player. An HDMI connection was used. The TV supports 480i / p, 576i / p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p at 24/50/60 Hz. The colors are correct, taking into account the type of video signal, the brightness definition is high. Color clarity is slightly lower than possible. In the standard video range (16-235), all gradations of shades are displayed on the gray scale (it is better to increase the Contrast setting to 56). In the case of 1080p at 24 fps, frames are output with alternating durations of 11 frames by 2 and one by 3. That is, the TV goes into a mode with a refresh rate of 50 Hz. Slow posting in a 24fps movie looks bad, as frame fading once every half a second is detected by the eye much better than 2: 3 strobing at 60Hz refresh rate. In most cases, the TV does a good job of converting interlaced video signals to a progressive image. When connected to a computer via HDMI, we received an image output in a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels with a frame rate up to 60 Hz inclusive. Refresh rate adjustments are performed for sources of 25 and 50 fps at 50 Hz and 30 and 60 fps at 60 Hz. In case of a 4K signal with original color fidelity (RGB output), the actual image is output to the TV screen without degrading the color fidelity.
Under Windows 10, HDR output to this TV is possible by selecting the appropriate options in the display settings. At a resolution of 4K and 60 Hz, the output goes in 8-bit per color mode, supplemented by dynamic color mixing, apparently with the help of a video card at the hardware level. At 30 Hz. 12 bits per color:
Playback of test videos with 10-bit color and smooth gradients showed that there is much more gradation than with simple 8-bit output without HDR. However, the presence of dynamic color mixing is visible to the naked eye, and it is performed better by the video card, and not by the TV itself. Test HDR videos with real and test images were displayed with good quality according to subjective feelings. The maximum brightness in HDR mode is the same as in SDR mode, also the color gamut is not wide (see below), so HDR support is nominal, but still there.
Determining response time and output latency
Black-white-black response time is 22.1 ms (15.3 ms on 6.8 ms off). Transitions between semitones occur in an average of 26.1 ms in total. There is no “overclocking” of the matrix. In general, from our point of view, this speed of the matrix is quite enough for playing not very dynamic games.
We determined the total output latency from switching the video buffer pages to the start of displaying the image on the screen. As a result, when connected via HDMI, the delay in image output in the case of a 3840 × 2160 and 60 Hz signal was about 50 ms. Such a delay is felt even when using the TV as a monitor for working on a PC, not to mention dynamic games.
The design is strict. The narrow bezel surrounding the screen is made of uncoated unpolished steel (apparently stainless, but highly magnetic). The frame reflects light sources and just something very light placed in front of the TV. The back panel, conventionally in the upper part, is made of a thin sheet of steel and has a resistant black matte finish. Backward-projecting casings in the center and in the lower part of the rear panel with an approach to the bottom end are made of black plastic with a matte surface. The TV looks neat enough from behind.

The outer surface of the LCD matrix is black and almost mirror-smooth, but there is very little matting, so the reflections in the screen are slightly blurred. The screen has anti-glare properties. the brightness of reflected objects is slightly reduced and their reflection takes on a brownish tint.
At the bottom end in the center there is a ledge with a window in front of transparent plastic. Behind the window are a status indicator (blinking white while the TV is loading) and, apparently, an IR receiver.
At the bottom on the ledge there is a single button with which you can control the TV in a limited way without using the remote control.
The standard stand consists of two plastic feet with a tick. Legs are supported by anti-slip rubber pads. The TV stands steadily and vertically, but the rigidity of the structure is low, the TV sways for a long time from a slight jolt. The distance between the leg supports is approximately 1255 mm. a TV set can be placed on a cabinet of this width. The measured case width is 1453 mm. the TV will fit into a niche of this width. An alternative way to install the TV without using the standard feet is to mount the TV to the wall using a bracket for VESA 300 250 mm mounting holes. The connectors are located in two recesses on the rear panel and are oriented down and to the side. The wires coming out of the niche, which is closer to the center, will have to be bent and brought back, which seems extremely inconvenient, especially when mounting the TV on the wall. It is not clear what prevented the manufacturer from making the niche open or providing a channel for cables. Measurement of brightness characteristics and power consumption
Brightness measurements were taken at 25 points on the screen, spaced 1/6 of the width and height of the screen (screen borders not included). Contrast was calculated as the ratio of the brightness of the white and black fields at the measured points.

Hardware measurements showed that the contrast for IPS-type matrices is typical by modern standards, and the uniformity of all three parameters is acceptable. On the black field, you can notice some variation in the backlight across the screen area. However, in the photo below, the main unevenness (flare to the corners) is caused by the fact that the camera was relatively close to the screen, and the contrast decreases when viewed from an angle:

In superficial testing of the playback of multimedia content, we limited ourselves to a number of files launched mainly from external USB drives. UPnP (DLNA) servers can also be sources of multimedia content. (And when using third-party programs and other servers.) We tested 2.5 ″ hard drives, external SSD and ordinary flash drives. The two tested hard drives worked without any problems from the USB port without additional power, and in standby mode of the TV itself or after a certain period of inactivity, the hard drives turned off. Note that the TV supports USB drives with FAT32, exFAT and NTFS file systems, and there were no problems with Cyrillic names of files and folders. The TV player detects all files in folders, even if there are a lot of files on the disk (more than 100 thousand).
It makes little sense to test the playback of audio files using the built-in player, since there will certainly be a third-party program that will handle this well and as convenient for the user. In the case of raster graphic files, the capabilities of the built-in player are worth discussing, since only it can play these files in a true resolution of 3840 × 2160, pixel by pixel, and even without reducing the color definition. All third-party programs, like the OS itself, display a static image at a resolution of 1920 × 1080. However, both the built-in player and third-party programs can output video in true 3840×2160 resolution using hardware decoding.
We have confirmed the ability of the built-in TV player to display bitmap graphic files in JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP formats. It is possible to launch a slideshow with transition effects and even to music (some preset is used, it is not clear how to change it). In general, the functionality of this player is very limited.
Video playback tests were carried out using the MX Player. Supports hardware decoding of audio tracks in at least AAC, AC3, OGG, MP3, DTS and WMA formats. Most of the modern high-resolution files we tested were playable without problems in hardware decoding mode, up to H.265 variants with 4K resolution at 60 fps (4K H.265 with 50 or 60 fps is unstable). Playback of HDR video files (HDR10 and HLG, MP4, M2TS, MKV containers) is supported, and in the case of files with 10 bits per color, according to visual assessment, there are more shades of gradation than 8-bit files. Unfortunately, the TV’s decoder does not support the VP9 codec, and the saddest consequence of this is problems with playing WebM streams from YouTube. There were also some troubles with decoding MPEG1 and MPEG2 of standard (low) resolution. the image could not be output with an increase to the closest edges of the screen and keeping the original aspect ratio. Sometimes it seems that the most ordinary video files did not want to be played in hardware decoding mode, or they were played, but with artifacts. However, this did not happen very often. The maximum bitrate of 4K video files, at which there were no artifacts yet, depends not only on the source, but also on the file format. If we focus only on the maximum bit rate, then when playing from USB-drives it was 300 Mbps, over a wired Ethernet network. 90 Mbps, and over Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz bands are supported). 120 Mbps from. In the last two cases, the media server of the Asus RT-AC68U router was used. The statistics on the router show that the transmission and reception speed is 433.3 Mbps, that is, the TV is likely to have an 802.11ac adapter with one antenna.
The volume of the built-in speaker system for a living room, corresponding in size to a given screen diagonal, can be considered sufficient. There are high and medium frequencies, a little low. The stereophonic effect is pronounced, but weak. There are spurious resonances in the body, but there is no rattling even at high volumes. However, in general, for the class of the acoustics built into the TV, its quality is acceptable.

The connectors are standard, full-sized and more or less loosely placed. There is no automatic switching to the input with an appearing signal if it is absent at the current one. Basic support for HDMI cross control works: TV turns on BD player when turned on and turns off when turned off, TV turns on when BD player turns on. You can connect external speakers or headphones to the TV via Bluetooth. Headphones (more precisely, a headset) could also be connected via USB, but the microphone on the headphones did not work.

This does not affect the quality of switching, and under normal conditions this oddity is hidden from view, so this is hardly a drawback.
The voice assistant works correctly: for several days he did not make a single mistake when reading words. But its algorithms don’t always work the way you expect. The frame refresh rate is 50 Hz, just like the competition. This is a typical indicator that provides passable smoothness of frame changes when displaying action scenes. But Philips has a 900Hz Picture Performence Index, and Thomson has 1000Hz. These TVs are smoother, with no tearing or jerking when watching, for example, a sports match or action scenes, which Xiaomi does not.
The LEDs for the backlight of the Xiaomi Mi TV 4S 43 are located behind the screen and are evenly placed over the entire surface. Because of this, the TV does not have a thin enough body, but the backlight is the most uniform, the appearance of side flares is excluded or you can reduce the brightness when viewing with a deviation from the center.

PatchWall is a feature of Xiaomi TVs. It’s a wall of content that doesn’t end there. Here are new movies, recommendations of popular films, TV channels (viewing via Wi-Fi). Content is provided by streaming services and online cinemas. In this case, the user first selects a movie, and then determines the content provider in the list. Movie recommendations become personalized over time based on user preferences. In the PatchWall search, you can search for films by actor name. The disadvantage of search is dialing with buttons on the remote control, which is very inconvenient (voice search here for some reason does not work).
The Google Assistant is a voice-based search assistant. It works correctly. Xiaomi TVs provide 6-month subscriptions to several popular cinemas: Megogo, ivi.ru, 24chasaTV, etc. And Google Play has a large set of applications.
Has 8 GB of internal memory. Plays most formats: MP3, WMA, MPEG4, HEVC, MKV, JPEG. For comparison: Thomson T43USM5200 does not read WMA.
Chromecast technology displays files from a computer or smartphone on a large screen. It is possible to control from a smartphone via the “Mi Remote”.
The remote control is small, modern and functional. Has only a few buttons, but each is required. It does not provide buttons for settings or exit to any specific menus or applications. But they can be easily accessed through the main menu, PatchWall, or using the Assistant. The remote control does not need to be pointed directly at the TV, as it works via Bluetooth.

On the bottom of the TV, there are two 6W speakers located at a great distance from each other. The sound is spacious, but there is not enough bass. The volume is not very high, but it is enough for watching movies or programs. For comparison: Thomson has two 8W speakers, Philips. 10W each. Dolby Digital, DTS decoders give realism and greater depth to the sound.
The TV displays 4K quality content well, but in terms of brightness and color rendering it is inferior to competitors: Thomson T43USM5200 for 24 thousand rubles and Philips 43PUS6503 for 30 thousand. It loses a lot when displaying dynamic scenes, does not allow achieving excellent smoothness. Has a quiet mediocre sound (no bass). But Android TV provides great opportunities, it has a clear interface, a simple menu. Voice assistant, a small remote control with a minimum of buttons, a smartphone application make operation convenient.
