The diagonal of the TV plays an important role when choosing a TV receiver. The comfort of watching video on the screen depends on the correct choice of the screen size. And it is completely wrong to say that the larger the diagonal of the TV in cm, the better.

How much will it be if you convert 1 inch to cm? As you know, 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters. Inch (from the Dutch. Duim. thumb) is the name for the unit of measurement of distance in European non-metric systems of measures. Today, an inch is most often understood as an English inch (English inch), equal to 2.54 cm exactly.

For example, if you take a 32-inch TV, how much will it be in cm? Using the calculations in the converter, we get that 32 inches in centimeters will be 81.3. Another example, converting 22 inches to cm, we get 55.9 centimeters. And if we take a diagonal of 42 inches, we get 106.7 centimeters.

## How to choose the size of the diagonal

Two factors influence the choice of the TV diagonal:

- distance. from which you will watch the television receiver;
- picture resolution. displayed on the screen.

And this picture resolution depends both on the screen you purchased and on the video signal supplied to the TV input.

In the picture you can see how to measure the diagonal of the TV.

You can check this yourself when choosing a TV receiver. If you look closely at a picture with low quality, for example, on-air television, you will notice all the shortcomings of both the image and the video signal processing circuits. And if you step back a little, small errors will become imperceptible.

For example, if you take a 32-inch TV receiver, then for a signal with 625 lines (terrestrial television), the distance to the screen will be about three diagonals 32×3 = 96 inches or 96×2.54 = 243 centimeters, which is approximately 2.5 meters. And if the image resolution corresponds to 720p, then the distance to the screen for normal viewing will already be 1.9 meters or more. If the TV is already Full-HD, then it will be convenient to view the video picture from a distance of 1.3 meters or more. These are the minimum distances to the screen, when viewed from which distortions caused by the structure of the video signal will not be visible in the picture.

For example, if your viewing distance is about 2.2 meters, then when buying an HD Ready TV, you can choose a device with a diagonal of up to 37 inches. If you choose a Full-HD TV, you can increase the diagonal up to 52 inches without sacrificing picture quality. And the new 4K (Ultra HD) models with UHD video conversion will already be over 60 inches at this viewing distance.

But when viewing from a distance that exceeds the calculated one, there will not be much difference between TVs with different resolutions. Do not forget that the video signal must correspond to the resolution of the device itself for the highest quality reproduction. Therefore, when today almost all TVs are Full HD and even models with Ultra HD resolution (4 times more than Full HD) appear, then the number of pixels in the video signal must be taken into account.

Terrestrial television still has SD resolution (625 lines). But digital television is already spreading more and more, and there the resolution needs to be recognized additionally, but it will be larger than SD. There are many films in Full HD quality, but there is very little content with Ultra HD so far. It is possible to advise for today all calculations to be carried out on the condition that you are watching a video with Full HD quality, and you will get the minimum viewing distance. And if you need to increase the distance, for example, installing a TV in the living room, then you will not see any damage to the picture quality.

The minimum viewing distance of the TV and the size of the screen diagonal can be related to the following table:

The diagonals of TVs are presented in inches and centimeters, the table makes it possible to choose the third one by two parameters. In the table, choose the horizontal size of the diagonal of the screen, vertically choose the video resolution on the screen (it depends on both the TV and the signal at the input), and at the intersection of these values there will be the desired viewing distance in meters.

A signal with 720p quality can be output by satellite TV programs, games from consoles, copies of BD discs, digital TV.

1080p resolution corresponds to Full-HD TVs and it is better to use such devices if you have such signal sources. Although there are circuit solutions for increasing the signal resolution to 1080p, such circuits do not always work perfectly. Everything needs to be checked on the spot.

Therefore, it is better to decide on the distance to the screen in advance and, accordingly, select the desired resolution and TV diagonal in cm for comfortable viewing.

- The diagonal of the TV is of key importance when choosing a technique. This indicator affects the level of pleasure from watching your favorite films and programs. In this case, the size of the TV should be selected more carefully for comfortable viewing in a particular room. Place of installation should be taken into account.
- The TV will only function properly if there is adequate ventilation. It should not be pushed close to walls and furniture. Leave a few centimeters of space. Of course, the diagonal directly affects the picture quality. If the dimensions of the house and the budget allow, then you should choose the largest TV.
- There is a certain ratio between the screen diagonal and the distance to the person watching TV. Previously, there were CRT TVs, which carried some harm to eyesight. The distance from the TV set to the person was equal to 4-5 panel diagonals. Modern models are safer, therefore calculations are made differently.
- Screen size, resolution and distance are directly related. The pixel structure determines the comfort of watching a movie or broadcast. There is a minimum distance at which it is impossible to distinguish between individual points. It is this that is considered optimal.
- The close proximity to the panel facilitates the use of peripheral vision. Feelings are as close as possible to what people experience in the cinema. The user gets the opportunity to immerse himself as much as possible in the action that takes place on the screen. However, the rule is not so straightforward.
- News broadcasts should be watched at an increased distance from the TV. This will allow you to track all content elements as efficiently as possible, including the crawl line, weather information, and the like. It is important that you do not have to turn your head in order to study a separate part of the image. Otherwise, you will not be able to enjoy using TV.
- The optimal distance from the TV is determined by the selected content. It’s worth noting that most of the movies are streamed in Full HD quality. It is possible to sit close to the panel. But TV shows are usually shown in SD or 720 p. Relatively speaking, the optimal distance is 1.5-3 diagonals.
