We have confirmed the ability of the built-in TV player to display bitmap graphic files in JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP formats. In general, the functionality of this player is very limited.
In the category of common formats, the TV media player does not support playback of some legacy video file formats, but they can be played back up to Full HD resolution using software decode such as MX Player. The volume of the built-in speaker system for a living room, corresponding in size to a given screen diagonal, can be considered sufficient. There are high and medium frequencies, there are practically no low frequencies. The stereo effect is pronounced. There are parasitic resonances of the case, but there is no rattling even at high volumes. The sound is harsh, but in general, for the class of acoustics built into the TV, its quality is acceptable.
The volume margin when using headphones at 32 ohms with a sensitivity of 112 dB is large, the level of background noise is lower than audible, low frequencies are already present, the sound quality is good. However, the difference when connecting headphones with a built-in DAC via USB is felt very well, and it is not in favor of the analog TV channel.
Determining response time and output latency
Black-white-black response time is 15.4 ms (8.7 ms on, 6.7 ms off). Transitions between semitones occur in an average of 20.7 ms in total. There is a very slight “overclocking” of the matrix, which does not lead to visible artifacts. In general, from our point of view, this speed of the matrix is quite enough for playing not very dynamic games.
We determined the total output latency from switching the video buffer pages to the start of displaying the image on the screen. As a result, when connected via HDMI, the delay in image output in the case of a 3840 × 2160 and 60 Hz signal was about 50 ms in normal mode. Such a delay is already felt even when using the TV as a monitor for working on a PC. The latency drops to around 35ms after enabling Game Mode in the TV settings. This is already better, but still a bit too much for very dynamic games.

The connectors are standard, full-sized and more or less loosely placed, with the exception of the unit with dual USB ports. There is no automatic switching to the input with an appearing signal if it is absent at the current one. Basic HDMI cross control support works: TV turns on when connected BD player is turned on, and TV turns off BD player when turned off. You can connect external speakers or headphones to the TV via Bluetooth. Headphones (more precisely, a headset) could also be connected via USB, but the microphone on the headphones did not work.

The subpixels of three colors (red, green and blue) are divided into four regions with domains in different orientations. Such a device is, in principle, capable of providing good viewing angles, which is facilitated by the variation in the orientation of the LC in the domains. To provide a wide dynamic range in brightness, some of the subpixels are turned off or their brightness is greatly reduced when the brightness of the output hue decreases. As a result, if you sit at a distance at which 4K resolution differs from Full HD, then many shades look “loose” with a visible mesh structure. If you sit further away, then this mesh is not visible, but the advantage from 4K resolution is already disappearing. And when working on a PC, in the case of some fonts, the period (.) Is simply not displayed. this is how the “brains” of the TV optimize the image. There is even more harm from such management of subpixels than from replacing part of the triads of subpixels with a white subpixel.
Note that there is no visible “crystal effect” (microscopic variation in brightness and hue) in this case.
This model is equipped with a tuner that accepts analog and digital signals for terrestrial and cable broadcasting. The reception quality of digital channels on a decimeter antenna fixed on the wall of the building (almost line of sight towards the TV tower in Butovo, located at a distance of 14 km) was at a high level. we managed to find TV channels in all three multiplexes (only 30 and 3 channels radio). True, TV froze after detecting channels in the first two multiplexes, and channels in the third had to be found manually.

Switching between TV channels is slow. about 3 seconds. This slowness is mildly annoying.
Teletext is supported. True, on the first channel, the text was displayed in Latin letters, but on a number of other channels. in Cyrillic.
Go to the Teletext settings to try to select a code page, it does not work. TV throws either a menu level above or to the home page.
Working with video sources
Cinema modes were tested when connected to a Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player. An HDMI connection was used. The TV supports 480i / p, 576i / p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p at 24/50/60 Hz. The colors are correct, taking into account the type of video signal, the brightness definition is high, although the horizontal targets are slightly blurred. Color clarity is slightly lower than possible. In the standard video range (16-235), almost all shades are displayed on the gray scale, only in highlights one shade closest to white is indistinguishable from white in brightness. In case of 1080p @ 24 fps, frames are output with interleaved 2: 3 duration.
In most cases, the TV does an excellent job of converting interlaced video signals into a progressive image, even with the most intricate alternation of half frames (fields), there is practically no output by fields. When scaling from low resolutions and even in the case of interlaced signals and a dynamic picture, the edges of objects are smoothed. the teeth on the diagonals are very weak. Video noise reduction functions very well without causing artifacts in the case of a dynamic image.
When connected to a computer via HDMI, we received an image output in a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels with a frame rate up to 60 Hz inclusive. In the case of a 4K signal with original color fidelity (RGB output), the actual image is displayed on the TV screen with a very noticeable decrease in color fidelity.
Under Windows 10, HDR output to this TV is possible by selecting the appropriate options in the display settings. At a resolution of 4K and 60 Hz, the output goes in 8-bit per color mode, supplemented by dynamic color mixing, apparently with the help of a video card at the hardware level. At 24 Hz. 12 bits per color:
Playback of test videos with 10-bit color and smooth gradients showed that there is much more gradation than with simple 8-bit output without HDR. However, the presence of dynamic color mixing is visible to the naked eye. Test HDR videos with real and test images were displayed with good quality according to subjective feelings. The maximum brightness in HDR mode is the same as in SDR mode, also the color gamut is not wide (see below), so HDR support is nominal, but still there.
Picture and sound
The Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S 55 has a 55-inch VA glossy matrix. The anti-glare is not too strong, so it is better for the TV to choose a place and position so that there are no windows or bright light sources directly opposite it.
The viewing angles are all right: the image fades smoothly at an angle, the distortion is low, and you will hardly have to regret that it is not an IPS matrix.
I was also pleased with the uniformity of the backlighting: the LED blocks are located right behind the matrix, so there are no strong drops even in the corners of the screen. We deliberately looked at the screen in the dark and did not see any “clouds”, which is rather a rarity for an LCD TV. By the way, the maximum backlight brightness is 327 cd / m2. Not bad, but this is clearly not enough for HDR (the minimum level for the declared UHD Premium certification is 1000 cd / m2).

The contrast ratio reaches 3000: 1. a commendable result! Taking into account that the default gamma is set to the optimal value of 2.2, the image in SDR mode is quite contrasting, but not “cluttered”. The default color temperature went off scale under 12000 K, and this is the first shock. The color gamut may be close to Rec. 709, but the color rendition is noticeably distorted due to the too cold overall tone. Red tones are especially poorer, which often lack juiciness.
After going through several modes, we came to the conclusion that the “Sport” preset (second shock) can slightly improve the situation. Here there is a more “cinematic” gamut of 2.35 and a color temperature of 8500 K. still better than it was.
But, as you can imagine, this does not solve general problems with color reproduction. We tried to twist the color temperature settings, in which there are only three positions: cold, normal, warm. They turned out to be simply inoperative. nothing changed on the screen, so you can forget about the optimal 6500 K, unless it is fixed in upcoming updates.
Almost everyone managed to sing praises to 4K resolution on a relatively inexpensive TV, but missed one subtle caveat: the Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S 55 matrix uses a non-standard subpixel structure, which is distinguished by an offset pixel grid. And on different tones, rather coarse static dithering is used (the formation of additional tones by mixing existing ones), due to which some of the pixels are muted on the screen and diamond-shaped patterns similar to ripples or moire are often visible.
All this adds up to an image that is noticeably inferior in clarity to the “correct” 4K. In real-world conditions, the advantage over Full HD with linear subpixel orientation remains minimal, if not noticeable at all. In addition, the TV does not perform well as a monitor: in almost all fonts and outlines, the “cross” structure of pixels is striking, which reduces the perceived sharpness of the image.
Image settings in Mi TV 4S 55 are present, but not applicable in practice (at least in the current firmware version)
To be honest, we don’t know why even mention the HDR format if the TV has absolutely standard brightness, backlighting and color gamut The fact is that Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S 55 is physically unable to show the difference between SDR and wide range HDR video. even if he really wants to. in addition to brightness, there is not enough color depth (10-bit picture is not supported, its maximum is 8 bits). This is aggravated by the fact that in attempts to “clamp” a wide dynamic range to their capabilities, firstly, semitones are lost, and secondly, flaws in the processing and inevitable signal conversion affect. Ultimately, ordinary SDR video looks better and more convincing than “pseudo-HDR”. The latter function was done rather for the sake of compatibility with signals and sources. Mi TV 4S 55 should be called an “HDR-Ready TV”.
The built-in sound pleased us. this is due to the sufficient depth of the TV case, where quite normal speakers fit. The volume margin is not the highest, but there is little distortion, and the timbre with hints of bass is much nicer than that of most very “squeaky” ultra-thin TVs.
Built-in media player
The TV can hardware decode H.264 and H.265 / HEVC videos, so we had no particular concerns about multimedia functions. “Heavy” video in 2160p resolution played quite easily from an external HDD, and even rewinding turned out to be quite fast.
What confused me was the presence of strange plumes that now and then appeared in some files. This was partly an annoying side effect of noise reduction, but even with Noise Reduction processing turned off, some scenes still showed unnatural motion blur. And this has nothing to do with the speed and physical properties of the matrix. flaws are completely on the side of the decoder, processing and software.
The question of supporting multiple audio tracks and switching subtitles also remained unresolved: these items were simply not found in the standard application, and there were no corresponding buttons on the remote control. On the other hand, the beauty of Android TV is that you are not limited by the manufacturer’s software. you can always put a third-party player to your liking.

As far as I understand, the 55-inch Xiaomi Mi TV 4S uses a VA screen matrix. The viewing angles are small. How does it manifest? If you look at the display at an angle greater than 10 degrees, the image loses its saturation. This is especially noticeable in red.
However, at a right angle, everything is just fine: the picture is rich, bright and pleasant. Any image looks very rich and colorful. Turning on my LG TV, I realized that it just had a terrible color reproduction. I had a similar impression when I installed a new LOC with an IPS matrix next to the old BenQ monitor with a TN matrix. As they say, heaven and earth.
For a whole month I was looking at the PatchWall screen and only now I read in the reviews that FullHD resolution is used there. I was very surprised, since until now I was confident in 4K. Came closer. really, loose letters and an image.
The distance from which you consume the content is important here. In my case, the TV stood at a distance of two meters from the eyes. At this distance, many details are already barely distinguishable. Especially when there is no direct comparison. FullHD and 4K in one image.
Therefore, color rendition is more important: how the picture looks as a whole. And here with this complete order.
For myself, I noted the following: 4K-picture is important, but not in the first place when watching video. Content (FHD / 4K) on a 55-inch diagonal at 2 meters is perceived equally well. Therefore, when watching films and TV series, I still preferred FulHD.
The display surface is semi-matt. With glare and reflection on the screen of Mi TV 4S, everything is fine: the spotlights in the room are almost invisible, the light from the window does not interfere with viewing. But movies and TV shows with dark scenes are best left for the evening.
As for HDR, Vladimir described a lot in his review, and I was even more convinced that the HDR technology on this TV works weakly.
On the other hand, last year I was at the presentation of a huge, very expensive 8K TV with all possible technologies, and even on such an innovative TV I did not really notice HDR. Of course, when you are shown beautiful HDR ON / HDR OFF demos on the same screen, there is a difference. However, in regular movies, where HDR is on by default, this all comes down to nothing. At least on Mi TV 4S.
A couple of words about updates. For a month of use, there were about four of them. Chinese fix information. But the recurring words in English. Bugs. were understandable 🙂 Frankly speaking, all the firmware did not introduce anything new, and the bugs were not fixed.
Turning on TV, options and settings
After connecting the TV to an outlet, you set up the remote control. Everything is very simple and clear, the process was described in detail by Vladimir Nimin.
The indicator under the TV lights up in red. The brightness is low, does not blind the eyes, the LED is almost invisible, but you can see that the TV is in active mode.
From the moment of switching on until the moment the TV switches to operating mode, about 30-40 seconds should pass. Up to this point, you see the picture from the last power outage. If it was the PatchWall page, then its, if YouTube, then the screen displays information about the absence of a Wi-Fi connection. Until the onset of full activation, nothing works on the TV, including the remote control.
It seems to me that Mi TV 4S does not turn off completely, but simply “dims” the backlight and puts the system into a power-saving mode. It is very comfortable. So, for example, my LG TV on webOS, after turning on for about a minute, reboots the system.
The main home screen is the so-called PatchWall wall. An extremely convenient solution is to aggregate films and series from the most popular streaming services. Of a dozen such services, only KinoPoisk is connected to me. I did it last year, when for 99 rubles a month it was possible to get both Yandex.Music and a subscription to a commercial proposal. Quite a reasonable price, in my opinion.
I get serials and films from KP. Of course, this is not always the top, but most of the time I watch movies from the 70s and 80s. And there is a lot of this good.
The main page of PatchWall has a list of TV ports to choose from, and just below the list of the most popular applications. For some reason unknown to me, I could not replace any program with my own. For example, I don’t use a video player at all and would like to “put” a DNLA service in its place. But alas.
By the way, the system has two themes. dark and light. I always used the light one, since there is no need to save the charge, and the TV’s power consumption will be the same for any topic. But the eyes get tired less with light (my opinion).
Quite a bit about the applications on this TV. Since Google Android is used here, you are entitled to use the Google Play Store. One important thing to keep in mind, though: the Play Store is for TV only. This means that most applications will not be here. For example, the usual Chrome browser is missing. But it is easy to install the Puffin browser on TV browser instead. I was also a bit disappointed by the lack of Netflix. On the forums, they write that it is not only for Russia and it is on TV from Xiaomi. Correct if I’m wrong.
Why Netflix? Evgeny Vildyaev kindly shared an account for which he pays 1,000 rubles a month, it is here that there is a lot of 4K HDR content.
There are almost no TV settings. All the necessary parameters are collected in the “Device Settings” section. By and large, you will be interested in only one item. “Image”. It contains five points. For example, on my LG TV there are about 20 of them, that is, you can adjust each picture parameter. Do you need so many parameters? In my opinion, no: after buying TV, I entered them once and did not touch them for 7 years.
Design, dimensions, ease of location
In terms of appearance, the Xiaomi TV is nothing original. However, modern TVs, probably, like smartphones, are similar to each other due to the tendency to reduce the bezels of the screens. Therefore, you have a huge display with bezels on the top, right and left of less than 10 mm, and below. less than 20 mm. Most importantly, there are no “flashy” skins, logos or stickers like “4K Super Ultra HDR Google Premium” here. At the very bottom, on the edge of the case, only the volumetric Mi is visible.
The TV frame is made of metal, as well as a part of the back side. There is also plastic. the central and lower parts. Under the video about the experience of use, they asked a question about heating during operation. It is almost nonexistent: the screen itself is slightly warm, and the back cover is at room temperature. Therefore, such a large TV will not act as a heater.
Vladimir Nimin in his review talked about adventures with legs for this TV: they say, I had to look for a screwdriver in the car, since it was not in the house. Everything was fine with me, so I put the massive legs in place quickly enough.
Of course, I was also embarrassed by a similar installation of the TV on a horizontal surface: the TV is wide, heavy, and the legs are short. Nevertheless, TV stands rooted to the spot.
Since my child of four is constantly in a room with Mi TV 4S, I checked all possible rollover options. The only thing you can think of is to hang on the top frame. In this case, of course, the TV set will crash to the floor.
Accommodation is another issue. In my case, an old 47-inch LG TV was squeezed into a niche between two cabinets. But Xiaomi Mi TV 4S 55 inches did not fit there. I had to put forward the curbstone and only then place the TV. If you are interested, the width of this model is 1230 mm, and the opening between the cabinets is 1210 mm. That is, quite a bit was not enough. It is impossible to move the cabinets away, since they are also fastened together with a shelf.
So if I decide to buy a TV with a similar or larger diagonal, then something will have to be done with cabinets that are almost firmly installed against the wall. In general, pay attention to the dimensions of the future TV and calculate the place of its installation.
The next point is the length of the power cable. Its length is only 150 cm. And here I was again unlucky: the socket is located to the upper left of the TV behind the cabinet, and the cable runs from the lower right corner of the TV. As a result, the network cable did not reach the outlet. Had to use an extension cord.
After connecting the power supply, the TV from Xiaomi does not show signs of life. That is, in standby mode, the operation indicator does not light up. Well, from some side it is even good: for example, if the TV is installed in the bedroom, then during sleep, any light indication of the TV can be annoying. As soon as you turn on the device using the remote control, the LED below lights up in red. Brightness is low.
Another important point is the location of the connectors. They are all on the back center. Some “look” to the left, others. down. From the top of the TV to the nearest connector about 40 cm, and to the farthest one. about 55 cm. I mean, reaching the slots you need is not easy enough. At least, without tipping the TV, connecting the cable is still a hassle. And if it hangs on the wall, then the task becomes overwhelming.
Probably, in the case of such large devices, the block with connectors should be taken out separately. But here is the question of the price: for 30,000 rubles my “Wishlist” is too big.
It seems to be such a trifle, but I took the control panel to a separate point. In terms of functions, there are no complaints about it: there are enough buttons, nothing superfluous. But the sounds that he makes when pressing the buttons are something!
The round navigation button clicks so loudly that you can hear it from another room even when the TV is running at medium volume. And when silence falls in the evening, my gatherings near the TV turn into “trills” of the control panel. In addition, the center OK button also emits a rattling sound.
In short, if during the day the clatter and clatter of the remote control are leveled by the sounds of a neighbor’s puncher, then at night the remote control reveals its abilities in all its glory 🙂
Considering that I got the TV already slightly second-hand, the remote control turned out to be in excellent condition. Most likely, Vladimir Nimin carefully kept the device in a bag.
The remote has a voice assistant button. It doesn’t work: the function is triggered in 6 cases out of 10. It is not very clear what this is connected with. Nothing happens when pressed.
