How can you connect a Xiaomi phone to a TV
Modern mobile smartphones have great functionality: good cameras, high resolution pictures and videos. But sometimes you need to view an image or video in large size, so it becomes relevant how to connect a Xiaomi phone to a TV.
How to connect a smartphone to a TV
There are many ways how to connect to a Xiaomi TV. Everyone can choose the most suitable option: cable, special adapters, wireless connection.
Using an HDMI cable to connect Xiaomi to a TV is a basic technique. Initially, the receiving device is turned off, connected with a cable, and then turned on.
In the TV menu, select the source from which the signal will be received. If the connection is correct, the broadcast will begin with a gradual amplification of the audio signal through the speakers of the receiving connected device. Since HDMI cables are equipped with special protective elements, the image output will take place without interference and failures.
If there is a SmartTV, then the resulting image will appear automatically when Xiaomi is connected to the TV.
Thanks to the built-in infrared transmitter, which is built into most modern gadgets, you can additionally control the connected device. Such possibilities are available in Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 or Xiaomi Mi Max 2. The infrared port must support IRDA mode. Additionally, you need to install the Mi Remote app.
To connect a Xiaomi smartphone to the TV, first connect the phone and the turned off receiver with a USB cable. You will not be able to fully work with the Internet and media content. You can connect a phone via USB if you need to display pictures, music and some other files on the screen, just like on a computer.
Not all TVs without SmartTVs detect a USB connected smartphone. Others perceive the device as a removable storage device.
Via Wi-Fi Direct (SmartTV only)
Only connect this pairing using Wi-Fi Direct if the receiver has a SmartTV with a Miracast controller. Other technology is not supported. Before connecting, the wireless data transfer mode is activated in the mobile smartphone. There is a separate item in the settings menu for adjusting the functions of wireless transceivers. Next, they activate work with a specific TV model in Wi-Fi Direct, where you need to output video and images from the phone.
A similar parameter is included for the connection on the TV in the settings. After communication, the screen should display the image of the smartphone.
The most important advantage is the protection of the transmitted data from extraneous noise and distortion during transmission. The user can easily transfer movies and broadcasts recorded on a mobile device from online services in high quality to the big screen.
To organize broadcasts on a TV using Bluetooth protocols, the receiver is first checked for the presence of a wireless controller. First, you need to connect the controllers on two devices and pair the two devices, and then the broadcast will begin.
This method has a drawback. the mobile device must be at a distance of closer than 10 m from the translator.
If your TV does not have built-in Bluetooth, you can use an external controller that will receive power to operate inside the plug where it is installed. To establish communication, select the port where the external adapter is inserted. The broadcast takes place in high quality, there is no distortion due to electromagnetic interference.
Another high-quality protocol for connecting your phone and TV. Wi-Fi is used for transmission. The possibility of this method depends on whether the receiver supports this technology or not. Most SmartTVs allow Miracard connection.
- The TV network settings include the Miracast item. Depending on the model, the name may differ slightly, for example, in Samsung devices, this is the “screen Mirroring” section.
- In the Xiaomi settings, go to the “Wireless Display” menu and activate it.
- An external device is searched for within a minute, then it appears in the list. Click on it.
If all actions are performed correctly, a picture will appear on the screen, just like on a smartphone.
Smart TV Box
There is a large selection of such consoles on the home appliance market, but it is best to take a closer look at LG or Samsung.
The connection is made according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The output of the picture on the screen is high quality. In fact, you will have your own home television.
Another popular wireless connection, which is similar to the standard obtained with a USB connection. It will not work to get a high-quality video on the monitor, but it is quite possible to watch pictures, documents and listen to music.
Mirroring the picture on the TV screen by installing the BubbleUPnP for DLNA application on Xiaomi. It is also here that they control.
There are several similar wireless connections. There is also Screen Mirroring.
What you need to connect
Connecting to a TV allows you to view the image and captured videos in large size. It is very comfortable.
The quality of the output image depends on the characteristics of the TV and the size of the media file. Images with higher original resolution are displayed without problems.
Various accessories may be required to connect smartphones to a TV. The list lists possible adaptations that can be used in different ways:
- directly a Xiaomi smartphone with the Mi platform;
- USB cable;
- Google Cast;
- USB-HDMI adapter and HDMI cable;
- Wi-Fi and SmartTV on TV;
- portable Android TV box;
- adapters you may need for other options.
If the wireless connection option does not suit you, then choose the right cable. The easiest way is to choose an HDMI cable, since this connector is present on all modern TVs. True, you will need to purchase an adapter for a mobile phone.
It is even easier to use a USB cable, since a similar output will also be available on TV.

For the Google Chrome browser, you can install the “Google Cast” extension. Thus, you can watch the broadcast from any services, including YouTube.
Pairing using Bluetooth
Before connecting Xiaomi Redmi 4 Pro to a TV receiver via Bluetooth, you need to make sure that the TV has a wireless controller. The user turns on the controllers installed in the devices, and then starts watching the video on the screen. The disadvantages of this technology include a small range of transceivers, which does not exceed 10 m indoors.
It is possible to use external Bluetooth controllers, which are connected to the USB connector of the TV. Power is supplied through the contact pads installed inside the plug. After establishing communication between the devices, you must select the port to which the adapter is connected in the TV settings menu. The technique provides high quality video transmission, the transmitted signal is not distorted by electromagnetic interference.
How to connect a Xiaomi smartphone to a TV
The function of connecting a Xiaomi smartphone to a TV allows you to view recorded clips or videos stored on the phone’s storage on a large screen. For switching, cables connected to the corresponding ports are used, or the wireless method. The pairing technique depends on the design features of the television receiver.
Additional Wi-Fi communication methods
Some of the Xiaomi equipment equipped with the Miui shell supports the additional function of connecting a wireless monitor equipped with a Wi-Fi controller. The user enters the wireless network settings menu, which provides a section for additional adjustments. Then you need to go to the point of selecting the display switching without using a cable. Smartphone scans the frequency range looking for compatible hardware.
After detecting the monitor, the device name will be displayed on the phone display, and the video will start streaming automatically. If the external screen is equipped with speakers and a signal amplifier, the sound is transmitted through the speakers. Otherwise, the sound is heard through the speaker of the smartphone, the side keys are used to adjust the volume. Wireless monitor switching mode is supported by Redmi Note 5 or Xiaomi Mi5, as well as a number of other models.
Some smartphones are equipped with the Android operating system without an additional shell, which changes the algorithm for wireless pairing with television receivers or monitors. For example, to connect the Mi A1 phone, you need to go to the hardware settings menu, and then find the section for adjusting the screen parameters. In the section, you need to go to the information broadcasting point, an icon with 3 dots will be displayed on the screen.
A menu of additional settings for information output will appear on the phone display, in which you need to activate the option to enable signal transmission to external monitors. The Wi-Fi controller automatically searches for compatible devices and then displays a list of available TVs or wireless monitors on the screen. After selecting the desired device, a duplicated phone display will appear on the screen. Then the user proceeds to view the content (for example, a video signal or photos).
If the TV does not have a Wi-Fi unit, then the limitation is bypassed using the external MiraScreen controller. To connect the product, you need an HDMI port or a special adapter that allows you to connect the adapter to old type television receivers. The device requires an external antenna (included) and USB power (supplied from a port on a TV or external adapter). After connecting, you need to select the type of operating system on the paired smartphone (iOS from Apple or Android for products from Xiaomi).
Wi-Fi Direct Smart TV only
The same setting is then enabled using the TV’s network settings menu. After turning on the transceiver units, an automatic connection occurs, an icon in the form of a phone will be displayed on the screen of the receiving device. The advantages of the method include protection of the transmitted signal from interference and the absence of additional cables in the room. The user watches movies recorded in the memory of a smartphone on the TV screen, or displays videos from online services on the display.
To connect a Xiaomi smartphone to a TV using the basic method via HDMI, you need to turn off the receiver and then connect the devices with a cable. After turning on the TV, you need to enter the menu and select the signal source. With correct switching, a video signal with sound is transmitted over the cable, which is amplified and transmitted through the TV speakers. Since the cord is equipped with a protective element, there is no distortion and interference on the screen, brightness and contrast are adjusted through the TV menu.
If you use a TV receiver of the Smart TV series (for example, assemblies from LG), then after synchronization with a smartphone, the image is automatically displayed on the display. Some mobile phones are equipped with a built-in infrared transmitter that allows you to control external equipment. This function is supported by smartphones Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Xiaomi Mi Max 2. The infrared port in the receiver must support the IRDA mode, the Mi Remote application is installed in the smartphone, which ensures the operation of the control signal transmitter.
Via USB cable
Before connecting your Xiaomi to your TV via USB, you need to purchase a shielded Micro USB cable. On some phones, a USB Type C connector is used, which should be taken into account when switching. After pairing the devices, the user enters the settings of the television receiver and selects the transmission of signals through the USB connector. The technique provides simultaneous transmission of graphic information and sound, but the signal quality is lower than when using the HDMI connector.
Wireless transmission: using Google Cast
To connect your Redmi 3S smartphone via Google Cast, you need an Android TV receiver. The technology allows you to transfer graphics and audio from laptops or mobile devices without the use of cables. You can use TVs with a Chromecast dongle connected to the HDMI port. After installing the Chrome browser with the integrated Google Cast extension on the smartphone, it becomes possible to display the contents of the opened pages on the external display.
To view content, you need to install the Chromecast app. After starting the utility, you must press the button to start broadcasting the image to the external display. The user can minimize the window on the smartphone screen, the broadcast does not stop on the external monitor. The keys located on the mobile device are used to adjust the sound volume. When you click on the video preview button, an additional menu appears on the smartphone screen, which allows you to start playback or put the video in the viewing queue.
Review of the media player Xiaomi Mi TV Stick (FHD)
Most media players on Android use a “tablet” version of the system, usually with an additional proprietary shell optimized for large screens and remote control. The TV version of this OS, Android TV, is mainly found in TVs, and there are not so many individual players based on it. Xiaomi is one of the few that produces such devices (see, for example, our review of the previous model, Xiaomi Mi Box S), and this year a miniature stick has replaced the “box” in its line.
But the remote control of the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick remains, in fact, the same as that of the Xiaomi Mi Box S. It is a relatively small “bar” with smoothed sides, vaguely reminiscent of the Apple TV remote control of the first generations, with a voice search button above the ring joystick and a minimal set of other buttons. under it. The remote, of course, connects via Bluetooth, but it does not have the functions of a gyroscopic mouse, so you won’t be able to control gestures. Of the differences from the previous generation of the player, you can only mention a different design of the Google Assistant and Netflix buttons and a new button for the Amazon Prime Video client instead of the abolished Live button (which gave access to the Live Channels service).
Hardware platform, performance
Xiaomi has announced the release of a new Android TV media player in mid-summer. At the same time it was announced that it will be available in two versions: basic Full HD, which was released in August, and a more “advanced” 4K HDR, which was promised a little later. At the time of this writing, it is still not on sale, so today we have a junior model, Xiaomi Mi TV Stick (FHD), on review.
The player uses an Amlogic SoC, which includes 4 Cortex-A53 cores operating at frequencies up to 1.5 GHz and a Mali-450 video subsystem (up to 750 MHz). There is 1 GB of RAM, there is also an internal storage of 8 GB (about 4 GB is available to the user).
According to unofficial leaks, the SoC installed in the Mi TV Stick is the S805Y. This is a budget solution for Full HD players, which is marginally faster than the S805X (mainly due to a slightly increased GPU frequency). S805Y chipset announced hardware support for decoding HEVC 1080p60 10-bit and VP9 1080p60 video.
Despite the fact that this chipset was presented quite recently, at the beginning of 2020, in terms of overall performance it turns out to be somewhat weaker than the S905L, which was used in the company’s previous player, Mi Box S. Apparently, Xiaomi decided that for the FHD version of their a new player, such a solution (and at the same time, the amount of RAM reduced by half) will be quite sufficient. Immediately, we note that a more efficient chipset is expected in the 4K version of this player. Amlogic S905Y2.
Xiaomi Mi TV Stick comes in a very small box in the traditional orange color. The package includes a remote control, a power supply, a USB cable, a short HDMI extension cable and paper documentation. except for the AAA batteries that power the remote control.
Xiaomi Mi TV Stick design
If the previous models of Xiaomi players. Mi Box. were not very different from each other in terms of design, then in the new product the company has seriously revised its approach to the form factor of this device. Now it is a “stick”, or “dongle”. a miniature body slightly larger than a large “flash drive” (92x30x15 mm) and noticeably smaller than the complete remote control, which itself is very compact.
The body of the player is made of black plastic, half is matte, half is glossy. The similarity with USB Flash Drive is enhanced by the HDMI connector at its end, which, if you don’t look closely, can easily be confused with USB. In addition to it, on the case you can also find only a micro USB port, which is used for power supply. the connection to the network is only wireless, via Wi-Fi.
You can connect the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick to the HDMI input of a TV or receiver either directly, if the configuration of the ports and the free space in the case behind them allows it, or through a small extension cord. it will not look so aesthetically pleasing, but with this connection option there will definitely not be any difficulties. The player can receive power both from the outlet, using the supplied power supply, and from the USB port on the TV.
The Live Channels service that disappeared from the remote control has not actually disappeared; it is still available in the list of applications. Recall that it allows you to collect in one place streaming video broadcasts from different sources and manage them in a “television” style, when each source looks like a regular TV channel.
Of course, you can install applications on this player manually, bypassing the Google Play Store, from APK files (for example, on the Internet, you can easily find recommendations for installing both torrent clients and streaming services with unlicensed content), but for such purposes, all.so there are more suitable options in the form of a large number of media players on the regular version of Android and with higher performance and functionality.
Review of the box Xiaomi Mi TV Stick
The Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is a useful thing if you want to appreciate modern technologies. Mi TV Stick allows you to use the Android TV operating system on a regular TV (which naturally allows you to connect external devices), a large monitor or even a projector. So, from the most ordinary device you can get a smart TV on which you can watch streaming video, play videos and photos from your phone, camera or tablet, listen to Internet radio, etc. Let’s see how this is implemented in practice. The TV box package is very compact and looks like this:
After unpacking, we see what is included in the package:
- The prefix itself.
- Remote Control.
- Pritania block.
- USB cable for connecting the power supply to the set-top box.
- HDMI extender.
By the way, about the remote control: it connects to the set-top box via bluetooth. Therefore, it is not at all necessary that the remote control and the set-top box are on the same straight line, as it was in old TVs. The remote control has the following buttons:
- turning on;
- voice dialing;
- joystick with OK button;
- three navigation buttons: main menu, back and selection menu;
- shortcuts to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video apps;
- volume keys.
The Mi TV Stick also has other very convenient functions:
- voice dialing: by pressing a special button, it is enough to say a search query and the set-top box itself will find the application, music or movie;
- Fast Casting. With Chromecast technology, you can quickly and easily cast videos, photos, or other content from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop straight to your TV. No wires required;
- stereo sound. both DTS and DolbyAudio decoding are supported here, so the sound is smoother and more dynamic.
As for the technical characteristics, they are quite enough for the tasks being solved: 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal memory, a quad-core processor and a powerful graphics accelerator.
We emphasize once again: using the attachment is easy and intuitive. Everything works smartly. The picture quality was pleasantly surprised. in my opinion, it is an order of magnitude higher than terrestrial digital television, the colors are saturated, the contrast is high. The only condition for stable, uninterrupted operation is a good wi-fi signal. As expected, the Mi TV Stick heats up during operation, but I would not say that this is critical. Even after 8 hours of work with high-quality video playback, the set-top box works stably, does not reboot.
- Operating system: Google Android TV 9.
- Processor: Amlogic S805Y, Quad-core Cortex-A53.
- Graphics: MALI-450.
- Memory: 1 GB.
- Flash Memory: 8GB eMMC.
- Wireless communication: Wi-Fi: 802.11a / b / g / n / ac, Dual-band Wi-Fi 2.4 / 5 GHz, Bluetooth 4.2.
- Video codecs: VP9-10, H.265, H.264, VC-1, MPEG1 / 2/4, real 8/9/10.
- Video containers: RM, MOV, VOB, AVI, MKV, TS, WMV, MP4;
- Audio: DOLBY, DTS, MP3, WMA, AAC, Flac, OGG.
- Ports: HDMI 2.0 (CEC supported), microUSB (for power).
- Optional: Chromecast support.
- Dimensions: 92.4×30.2×15.2 mm.
- Weight: 28 g.
Conclusion: Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is a very useful purchase both for those who want to modernize their TV, breathing new life into it, and for owners of Smart TVs. After all, as testing has shown, using such a set-top box is sometimes much more convenient than using the built-in functions of your smart TV.
Turning on the Xiaomi Smart TV for the first time
Xiaomi is known for manufacturing a wide range of devices. And of course, many users think of smartphones first. But Xiaomi also makes Smart TVs. But how do you connect them? We will tell you about this today.
First, you need to take the TV out of the box and fix it on the standard legs. For attaching the legs, screws are included in the kit, they have a cross-shaped head.
Next, you need to connect the TV to the network. And insert 2 AAA batteries into the standard remote control.
Now let’s get acquainted with the remote control. There are 8 buttons on it, the functions of which we will describe from top to bottom:
1) power button;
2) enable voice search;
3) a disk for navigation in the system;
4) the central button, duplicating the action “Okay”;
5) turning on the PatchWall system;
6) step back;
7) switching to pure Android;
8) bottom rocker for volume control.
Next, turn on the TV by pressing the power button. It is on the TV on the bottom edge under the Mi logo.
Next, we synchronize the remote control and the TV by pressing the center button on the remote control. If the remote control is not found, you need to press the outermost round buttons on the remote control and repeat the connection operation.
Next, select the region. To navigate the menu, use the joystick on the remote control.
The next step is to select the system language. Russian language is available, but we did not find Belarusian.
Next comes the choice of setting: via an Android device or not. If you choose via Android, the TV will take almost all the data from the owner’s smartphone. But such a smartphone may not be available, so consider the option of full manual configuration.
We connect Smart-TV to Wi-Fi. We select the home access point and then enter the password. By the way, for ease of input, you can connect a wired keyboard to the TV. By the way, these TVs support connection via wired Internet.
To fully unfold the TV, you need to connect it to Google services. To do this, the next step is to log into your Google account. Gmail is used to sign in.
You can use your smartphone, computer, or remote control to log in. Through the latter, we will connect. To do this, on the virtual keyboard, enter the login (mail) and password from it.
The next step is reading and agreeing to the user agreement.
Next, we give permission to use the location of the TV or skip this action. In order for the TV to use all the possibilities, it is better to issue the resolution.
Next, Android asks for permission to collect user data. It’s best to refuse.
The next step is the name for the TV. You can choose one of the proposed names or write your own.
Next, we read and agree with the user agreement from Xiaomi.
It is better to refuse a request to improve the performance of devices.
Next, we get acquainted with the capabilities of the TV, flipping through the displayed slides.
In the next step, the system will show you how to use the remote control to change systems. Indeed, the Xiaomi TV has as many as 2 shells. pure Android and PatchWall. Each of them has a dedicated button on the remote. PatchWall is activated by the Mi button, and pure Android by the button with a drawn circle.
The TV will then boot into the system. And the user will be able to enjoy the content on the new TV.
Chromecast on iPhone
Unlike Android smartphones, here you can use Chromecast only if the application you are using supports this technology. The ability to broadcast the entire screen is absent here. Apple developers are very picky about their products in terms of security, excluding the potential for loss of confidential data.
You can guess about support by the Chromecast application by the presence of the corresponding icon, which can be located somewhere in the application menu or on the home screen. Click on this icon and select our device, after which the broadcast will start.
Using Chromecast on Different Devices
Now let’s move on from theory to practice. The methods of using the media player on a PC under Windows and MacOS, on “apple” and Android-smartphones are somewhat different, so we will give small instructions for each of the devices.
How to connect phone / PC to TV using Chromecast
Of course, not all applications support Cast technology. But no one forbids developers to add support for this protocol to their software products, since it is implemented in such a way as not to depend on a specific platform.
Therefore, on everyone’s favorite YouTube, the corresponding button appears regardless of where this video service is launched. on a Mac, a computer running under Windows, or on a smartphone. Cast compatibility is provided by many well-known streaming (and not only) platforms, including Netflix. Spotify. And the number of such compatible applications is constantly growing.
But not everything is so rosy. For example, a video service that is quite popular abroad (not many people know it in Russia) Amazon Prime Video does not cooperate with Google on this issue. But Amazon has its own development, which is an analogue of Cast technology. this is Fire TV. True, the ability to broadcast from Prime Video using Chromecast is still available. for this you need to take advantage of the mirroring capabilities. The essence of this function is to transfer the contents of the screen of a smartphone or tablet to the TV screen. Of course, we are not talking about great interactivity here, but with the help of such a cunning workaround, almost all services that do not officially support Cast technology can be broadcast on the big screen.
As for the maximum resolution, when connecting a Chromecast, it is possible to provide video broadcast with a resolution up to 4K. The mirroring function enables the transfer of any content, from slideshows and presentations to photos and documents.
Gamers can also use Chromecast to allow others to watch the gameplay. For the sake of fairness, we note that today there are not too many applications of a purely entertainment nature with support for the Cast protocol. If we talk about very popular, then it is worth mentioning Monopoly, as well as the famous Angry Birds Friends.
How do you connect your Chromecast to your TV? Let’s take a closer look at the procedure. The device connects to the source of media content via Wi-Fi, and we’ll talk about this in the settings section. It connects to the Google Chromecast TV by simply inserting it into the HDMI connector. The package describes the connection procedure in sufficient detail. If your TV is not equipped with this port, the device cannot be used. On the contrary, if there are several HDMI ports on the TV, they are usually numbered and you need to remember the number to which the Chromecast is connected.
As for the power supply of the device, the HDMI connector is not intended for this, you need to connect the Chromecast to the USB port of the TV receiver. For this, a Micro-USB adapter is included in the package. If the TV does not have a USB connector, you should not despair either. you can also power the device from a regular outlet using the supplied adapter.
Now let’s consider what needs to be done next for the technology to work.
Chromecast on Android
The functionality of Chromecast on Android is richer than on smartphones running iOS, especially when it comes to broadcasting content on the big screen. The fact is that the Android OS is endowed with the ability to broadcast the full screen, and not just individual applications.
How important is it? If the app you want to capture does not support the Chromecast protocol, then casting the entire screen is the only way to transfer its content to your TV. So the answer is yes, the function is really in demand.
To activate the screen, you need to go to the smartphone settings and find and select Cast in the connected devices section. After that, a list of available devices will be displayed. choose our own, as we did for PC.

How Chromecast works
The proprietary Cast protocol is the intellectual property of Google. It is he who is at the heart of the Chromecast device and a number of counterparts from other manufacturers. This protocol is originally focused on transferring images from a mobile device to a TV (in the case of streaming audio, the receiver can also be a smart speaker). Of course, the Cast protocol is integrated into almost all of Google’s media apps. And what is important, it is cross-platform, that is, it provides the ability to pair a TV with a device operating under any platform.
The Chromecast uses Wi-Fi to connect to the same home network used by your smartphone or laptop. This allows collaboration devices to sync with almost no lag.
The principle of operation is quite simple: if the Chromecast is connected to the network, then the Cast icon appears in the application that supports this technology. it is this icon that is used to initiate the transfer of content to the end device connected to the Chromecast.
