How to set up your TV

Adjusting the aspect ratio of the image (Aspect Ratio)

Adjusting the brightness level (Brightness)
On an HDTV, contrary to logic, the picture brightness setting is usually responsible for the level of the black tint, not the white. For this reason, you need to adjust the brightness of the black and dark gray shades. Select “Brightness” in the setup menu (or click “Next” in the Aspect Ratio menu). A test pattern appears.
Open the “Brightness” setting menu on the TV screen and compare with the sample, which has 9 grayscale blocks and a background fill sample. Set the brightness to the lowest level, and then gradually increase it. The ideal setting will be when the background, which has a matte black tint, begins to become more saturated. All that is needed is to achieve the best match between the color shades on the sample and on the TV screen. The THX logo and the shadow behind it should be different in tone. If both the logo and the background become brighter during adjustment, then the allowable limit has already been exceeded.
Adjusting the contrast level (Contrast)
Adjusting the contrast level adjusts the white level. This procedure is the same as adjusting the brightness level. In the mobile application, select the “Contrast” menu and you will see eight white and gray squares in a black frame on the HDTV screen. Call up the contrast setting menu on the TV (it may be called “Picture”). If you can manage to adjust the colors of all eight squares and make them clearly visible, that’s good. Otherwise, start adjusting the contrast from the lowest level until the result is satisfactory.
This kind of customization is more complex. Typically, the best color patterns on a TV can be seen in the “Cinema” or “Movie” mode. But if you want to have more balanced and softer shades, select the “Color” menu in the mobile application. A red rectangle on a white background will appear on the screen. Click on the camera icon at the top of the screen and point the camera of your mobile device at your TV. Its screen will appear completely red through the camera lens as the app uses a red filter for calibration. In the menu on the TV called “Color” (or “Saturation”), slowly reduce the level to the minimum until the shades of red on the sample and on the screen are identical.
Adjusting the color saturation (Tint)
The color setting “Color” adjusts the saturation of the color, and “Tint” controls how green is green and red is red so that the overall color tones in the picture are more balanced. The process for setting this parameter is the same as for the “Color” setting, except that the red rectangle will be replaced by yellow. On your device, select the “Tint” menu and tap the camera icon. Start adjusting the saturation level on the TV until you match the color on the TV screen with the sample in the app.
Color calibration will largely depend on the specifications of your TV. Only a trained specialist with a more advanced set of tools, and not a simple mobile application, can make the perfect image adjustment. But, in general, setting up a TV using samples from the application will allow you to have a high-quality picture without more complex manipulations.
Setting the display of fonts
A person spends most of his time typing on the keyboard and reading information on the monitor, so you need to adjust the fonts so that the user is comfortable with the PC for a long time. The easiest way to do this is using ClearType, which will be discussed below.
If the problem is not in the angularity of the font, but in its size, then the display setting is performed according to the following algorithm:
- Enter WinR combination until the input menu appears.
- Register the dpiscaling command.
- Go to “Setting a custom zoom level”.
- Adjust the desired scale.
You can also enter this menu through the PU, which is done like this:
- Right click on Start.
- Go to “PU”.
- Carry out the same actions as described above.
Equalizes color temperature. The same gamma setting is done again, only now it happens more precisely, adjusting exclusively the yellowness and blueness. All this happens in the standard Windows-controlled monitor customizer, which is invoked as follows:
- Press the Win R combination until the “Run” window appears
- Enter the command dccw.exe and click OK.
- Follow application recommendations until the grayscale window appears.

For Mac owners, the calibration will be as follows:
- Go to the menu and select “System settings”,
- Go to the “Monitors” submenu
- Press “Color”.
- Click “Calibrate” and follow the recommendations specified in the customizer.
Grayscale is chosen because it will be easiest to notice shades that are too warm or cold. It is easier to set up matte monitors: due to their lack of glare, they practically do not change their color temperature due to the environment.
How to set up your monitor correctly
The process is simpler than it seems. you just need to have a computer or laptop in front of you. and 15 minutes of free time. Further in the material, the setting will be described step by step, which will simplify the process for beginners.
Before setting up the monitor, you must connect the screen to the PC itself. It is desirable with modern methods. Then the quality and resolution of the picture will be maximum. Below are the main types of connection of displays to PCs and laptops.
When installing and connecting, you should follow the recommendations:
- Place the monitor in one place and try not to move.
- The room must be lit. It is worth setting up in the light in which the computer will be operated.
- Before starting the calibration, the screen should be turned on a little. For modern TN or IPS-displays, 3-5 minutes are enough. Older LCD, LCD and TFT screens need at least half an hour.
Tip: If the monitor is used in artificial and natural light, it is worth creating several calibration profiles with different settings.
What is the monitor setup for?
A calibrated screen will show more natural tones, closer to real ones. It is advisable to adjust the color of the monitor every time the lighting changes. sometimes a display that has been adjusted under daylight may appear bluish under normal lighting.
Pros use a calibrator, a device that connects to a screen to determine the color. But since not everyone has it, it will be explained below how to properly set up a monitor at home both through built-in programs and thanks to third-party applications.
Working with gamma allows you to achieve natural color reproduction. You need to go to the standard calibration again. The screen will have 3 sliders in scarlet, green and blue. They adjust until a gray cube is clearly visible against a background of black and white stripes. Also, adjustment is carried out using circles on the same striped background. Correction occurs until the center of the circle turns gray.
By changing the sliders, you can adjust the display colors, which is very important when using frameless monitors, since due to the structure of the eye, a person can see slightly different shades at the edges.
Interesting fact: Some designers deliberately remove the gamut sliders from time to time in order to understand how accurately their monitors reproduce certain shades.
Thanks to precise brightness correction, the picture will have rich colors and deep blacks. Usually this is done with the help of a “target”, where several rows of rectangles with a slight gradation of shades are set in a row.
If there are no special programs, it is enough to carry out the following actions:
- Find similar images by typing “Pictures for monitor calibration” into the search.
- Download them.
- Open full screen.
- Change monitor brightness.
Most often, in Windows laptops, the brightness keys are located at F11 and F12. To activate, hold down Fn and the required button, depending on the desired result.
Important: It is not always F11 and F12 that are responsible for brightness, so the best solution would be to revise the data sheet for the screen and keyboard in order to find the brightness correction parameters at a particular moment.
To adjust the brightness of the monitor, it is worth making sure that the picture matches the parameters below, such as:
- the squares merge at the edges. reduce the contrast;
- only on the left. increase the brightness, only on the right. on the contrary, decrease;
- when the brightness changes, several parts merge. tweak the contrast.
While adjusting the brightness of the monitor, you need to be in a well-lit room. In muted tones, the screen will appear brighter than it actually is.
It’s okay if you can’t see all the rectangles. some monitors simply have a weaker matrix. Merging 2-3 squares is not critical.
Next, you need to adjust the resolution. the number of pixels horizontally and vertically. The indicator is always set to the maximum possible. For example, for an UltraHD monitor, it will be 4K.
On Mac, the resolution changes a little differently. For this you need:
- Go to the menu.
- Go to Apple → System Preferences, select Displays and go to Monitor.
- Then just go to “Scaled” and select one of the options.
Setting the screen refresh rate (hertz)
To carry out this stage, you need to exit the built-in calibration and carry out the following actions:
- Right click on the Desktop and go to “Options”. You can also go to “Start” and select “Settings”.
- Go “System”. “Display”.
- Select “Add. display parameters “.
- Find “Display Information” and enter “Display Adapter Properties”.
- Change hertzovka one of the proposed methods: go to “Monitor” and make settings, or go to the subsection “Adapter”, go to the “List of all modes” and make the necessary settings.
If the picture disappeared and notifications appeared: “Out of range” or “Input not supported”, wait a couple of minutes for the PC to accept the changes.
To change the hertz pattern in Apple computers, it is worth:
- Go to Apple menu.
- Go to “System Preferences” and go to “Monitors”.
- Hold down the Option key, select “Scaled” until the hertz menu appears.
- Select the desired value and confirm it.
First of all, you need to consider that we are talking about the consumer approach. Professionals are guided by completely different tasks and opportunities. And their requirements are different from everyday ones. The decisions of professionals require serious expenses that are unlikely to be justified if your earnings do not depend on the quality of the image.
Monitor settings. control the refresh rate of the screen
For CRT displays and modern LCD models, the maximum refresh rate is recommended. Since in this case it will be possible to avoid flickering on the screen, which negatively affects human vision. It is also desirable that the video card and monitor support a similar maximum frequency.
A high screen refresh rate is necessary so that the Monique can quickly respond to fast graphics and rapid movements in games (from 85 Hz), for office applications 60 Hz will be enough.

Contrast, brightness and color temperature of the monitor

By adjusting the color temperature, the gamut can be brought closer to the real one. In particular, the reflection of white color on the screen will depend on this temperature. it will be snow-white, blue or yellowish. When adjusting the brightness, use an illuminated white sheet of paper using the color temperature control.
