How to determine the release date of Apple equipment by 12-digit serial number
Serial number is a unique combination of numbers and letters that characterizes any Apple device, be it Mac, iPhone, iPod, iPad, as well as all Apple-made accessories: cables, cases, adapters, etc. Although the serial number looks like a random combination of arbitrary characters, it is not. The serial number contains encrypted information about the place of manufacture of the device, about the year and week of its release, as well as about the model of the produced gadget.
Previously, with the help of a serial, it was easiest to find out the release date of the device. it was enough to look at the third, fourth and fifth characters, which were always numbers. The third showed the last digit of the year of manufacture (for example, 8 = 2008, 9 = 2009), and the fourth and fifth together gave the number of the week in which the device was released (from 01 to 52). But such a system operated only during the first decade of the 21st century. Since 2010, Apple began to switch to a new format for serial numbers, instead of 11-digit serial numbers, 12-digit ones are now used.
An example of such a new serial number is shown above. There are no more familiar numbers in it. But does this mean that the year and the number of the week will no longer be found out? Not at all. True, it is much more difficult to do this using the 12-digit serial number.
The structure of Apple’s 12-digit serial numbers is as follows:
- the first three characters are the code of the factory in which the device was released. Unfortunately, no one except Apple employees knows the full list of these codes.
- the fourth character is the half-year code in which the device was released
- the fifth character is the code of the week of release within this half-year
- the sixth, seventh and eighth characters. a unique code for each device
- the last four characters are the model code showing generation, memory size, color, specifications, etc.
We are interested in the year and week of release. but without additional decryption it will not work to recognize them. You need to look at the fourth and fifth characters of the serial number. As we have already said, the fourth character encodes a half-year, and according to a very strange system. the half-year starts from 2010, and the numbering is alphabetic, starting with the letter C. The letters E, I, O and U are excluded from the numbering. In total, 20 letters are obtained, i.e. Apple will use 12-digit serial numbers for exactly ten years, and in 2020 it will switch to a new format (possibly to 13-digit numbers). The correspondence between letters and years is as follows:
The fifth character of the serial encodes the number of the week of release within the half-year, both with numbers and with letters. First there are numbers from 1 to 9, then the letters of the Latin alphabet (except for A, B, E, I, O, S, U, Z). a total of 27 possible values. The fifth character cannot be deciphered without the fourth: first you must find out if the device was released in the first or second half of the year.
Complicated? Let’s analyze it using a practical example from the beginning of the article:
The fourth character is J, which means this is the second half of 2012. The fifth character is L, taking into account the second half of the year, this is the 43rd week of 2012.
How to find out which iPad model I have
One of the features of Apple technology is that it does not have a model name. For example, on iPad tablet computers it is simply written “iPad” and it is not easy to understand which particular model it is.
In fact, all the necessary information is on the case, you just need to know some of the features of Apple technology. In this material, we will demonstrate at once three ways how you can find out the iPad model by the information that is indicated on the device case.

Intel Processor Labels
- Intel processor series
- I7. top-end processors supporting all Intel technologies have 4 cores, 8 MB L3 cache.
- I5. processors of the middle price segment, can have from 2 to 4 cores. Equipped with 3 to 6 MB L3 cache. There is no support for Trusted Execution, Hyper-Threading and Virtualization Technology.
- I3. budget series of processors, has at its disposal 2 cores and L3 cache with a volume of 3 MB.
- Indicates the generation of the Core i-x processor series. SandyBridje is marked with 2, IvyBridge is marked with 3.
- Indicates the position in the series. The higher the number, the faster the processor works. Depends on clock frequency.
- Processor version
- K. such a processor has an unlocked multiplier, which means it can be overclocked.
- M. processor used in mobile devices (smartphone, tablet).
- P. processor without automatic overclocking.
- S. such processors have power consumption reduced to 65 W.
- T. these processors have a reduced power consumption of up to 45/35 W.
Pentium Dual-Core processors (released on new platforms) are also a better modification of the processor than Celeron.
Example E5700 is a lineup, the higher the number, the more productive the processor.
In new processors, how they are labeled is incomprehensible, you cannot determine on which core is performed, we are looking for information about these processors on the intel page.
Processors are marked with numbers. The first defines the generation, for example, Corei3 3245 belongs to the third. Sometimes after the numbers there are letters that mean:
- K. accelerates;
- S and T. the core has reduced heat dissipation and power consumption. These features are implemented at the expense of performance degradation;
- R- speaks of a powerful built-in video core.
The differences between the Corei3, i5 and i7 lines should also be highlighted. The first ones have two cores, but they have Hyper-Treading, i.e. process four data streams, and are seen in the system as quad core. The i5 series has four cores and TurboBoost technology, which boosts the CPU frequency for additional performance gains. The seventh series has all the features of the previous lines.
Hyper-Treading means that there is one core physically in the processor, but due to the technology, the second (logical) core is created virtually, i.e. the number of physical is multiplied by two.
Intel processor markings
Intel Processor Markings and Generation Definitions of Intel Core I3 / I5 / i7 Series Processors.
Labeling old processors for the LGA 775 socket.
Celeron. modification of budget processors. (Still released on new platforms).
The number is the lineup, the higher the number, the better the processor.
In new processors, everything is not clear about the model number, so it is better to look for information about these processors on the intel page.
E8400 model number the higher the better. (Compared to one line of processors).
But do not forget about the characteristics of the processor itself.
X on some processors means Extrime Edition processor. With a multiplier unlocked.
Modifier Core 2 Quad processors being the first of four core processors.
Q6600 letter Q and means that the processor is 4 core (quad).
Some processors are designated QX9650 with the letter X indicating that the processor is Extrime Edition. (multiplier unlocked)
Low power marked with letter suffix S
In numbers, as elsewhere, the higher the better.

Unlike the iPhone, Apple’s tablet computer is quite difficult to identify, so not every user can cope with this task. However, if you have even a small idea about the dimensions of your iPad, then this will greatly facilitate the search process.
In addition to the marketing name, the tablet computer has a model number. And there are several of them. One of them is located on the body of the device, namely in the lower part under the iPad logo. It has a fine print. It is easy to recognize thanks to the word “Model”, a capital A and a four-digit number combination.
Note! The device number, as a rule, includes encrypted data about the dimensions of the screen and the generation of the tablet, the presence or absence of a wireless module.
IPad mini models
Tablet computers of the mini series from others are quite simple to distinguish, because they are small in size and weight. Metal buttons on the case. In total, there are three models with the numbers А1455, А1454, А432, the first two of which are characterized by the presence of GSM. Answering the question, what is the A1455 model, we can say that the iPad also has a Lighting connector, unlike other gadgets.
How To Identify Which iPad You Have. 2 Ways (2021)
There are no external differences between the 1st and 2nd generation of this series. The only thing that will allow you to easily distinguish between models is a high brightness screen. The mini 2 has a SIM tray. The gadget with the А1489 number does not have GSM. External differences between the 2nd and 3rd generation of tablets are the addition of golden models, as well as the presence and absence of GSM.
By number on the lid
You will be able to find out the generation of the iPad by the number indicated on the back cover of the device.
Determining the model is even easier than verifying an iPhone for authenticity. To do this, you can use the table below:
A1219 (Wi-Fi) and A1337 (for Wi-Fi and 3G devices)
A1395 (Wi-Fi), A1396 (for GSM models) and A1397 (for CDMA models)

IPad Air Series
The first generation of iPad Air tablets received two versions. Model numbers A1476 and A1475 are equipped with a SIM card tray. Devices with license plate A1474 can only provide Internet access via Wi-Fi.
The second generation iPad Air has got redesigned speakers. Manufacturers began to release tablets of this series in golden color. The main external difference between the iPad Air 3 and other models is the enlarged screen. In this case, the diagonal is 10.5 inches. For predecessors, this parameter is 9.7 inches.

Only a brighter display will help distinguish the models from each other. “Inside” the second generation, the same SIM-card tray makes it possible to determine the model. Model A1489 does not have a cellular module, but devices with numbers A1490 and A1491 still received it.
The visual differences between iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 2 are only in the fact that the manufacturers have added a tablet made in gold to the lineup. Inside the series, devices are distinguished by the presence and absence of a cellular module.

The second generation iPad has become thinner and has two cameras (rear and front). Different variations of the front panel colors (white and black) are also available to users. Models with the number A1395 do not have a SIM card tray. This is the only difference between them from the A1396 and A1397 devices.
Distinguishing the iPad 3 from the previous generation of tablets will allow a wider 30-pin connector. over, the specified tablet is somewhat thicker than its predecessor. The device with the number A1416 is manufactured without a SIM card tray. This will help distinguish it from the A1430 and A1403.
The appearance of iPad 4 almost perfectly copies its predecessor. Visually, the tablets differ only in that in the more modern generation, the developers have installed the Lighting connector. “Inside” the iPad 4 series can be distinguished by the presence or absence of a cellular module. Devices with license plates A1460 and A1459 have it, while tablets with the number A1458 can only provide Internet access via Wi-Fi.
The fifth generation of the iPad series has received a fingerprint sensor and more modern hardware. The visual differences lie in the greater variability of the colors of the back cover. There is no external difference between these devices in comparison with the iPad 6.
What’s the latest version of iOS for my iPhone or iPad: how to find out and where to download
iOS is the simplest operating system from the point of view of interaction with an inexperienced user, and this is one of the main reasons for the popularity of the iPhone and iPad among absolutely all categories of the population. Almost any user can solve problems that have arisen in the iOS software environment and even reinstall the OS on his own.
How to install new (latest) iOS on your iPhone or iPad
The easiest way is to reflash the iPhone “over the air”. To do this, just go to the above-mentioned section “Settings → General → Software update”, click the “Download and install” button. In this case, all existing data will be saved on the device. It is important to remember that installing iOS “over the air” should never be done if there is a jailbreak on the device.
To completely reinstall iOS via iTunes (on Windows), or Finder (on Mac), you will need to perform a slightly more complex algorithm of actions, which is described in detail in this material. In this case, you will need an up-to-date version of iOS for a specific iPhone or iPad.
Where to download the latest iOS IPSW files for any iPhone or iPad
Apple does not allow installing outdated versions of the operating system on its mobile devices (i.e. rolling back or downgrading the iOS version), so only the latest firmware released for it will be available for each gadget.
What is iOS and what types of updates are there
So, iOS is a software shell that controls the hardware modules of the iPhone or iPad. The main advantage of this operating system is that it is produced by the manufacturer of mobile gadgets. Apple. In addition, developers of third-party applications also focus on a rather narrow range of devices, which means that there are almost no problems with compatibility, the choice of the software version and its installation.
Another important nuance is that Apple distributes its operating systems for free, without any hidden conditions (required subscriptions for products or services, the presence of paid previous versions, etc.). That is, you can download the current firmware version for your device from the official website, without the risk of installing a pirated copy with malware.
Apple releases 3 types of iOS updates:
Beta versions for registered developers.
Beta versions for regular users registered in the Public Beta Program.
We talked in more detail about all types of iOS updates here.

Benefit: “How to find out the model of Apple iPad
In fact, the iPad 2 (2nd generation), New iPad (3rd generation) and iPad with Retina Display (4th generation) are very similar in appearance, so it is not easy to determine by eye which iPad, of the above, is in front of us. An advanced Apple user of course will look at the cable connector, carefully examine the box, take a closer look at the pixel detail and determine the model. But what should an ordinary user do when he sees a tablet for the first time in his life? How to determine which iPad he is holding? We will try to answer these questions today. After reading carefully to the end, you can also find out the version of your iPad.
The first thing we can suggest is to read the articles. “How to check an iPhone by serial number”, and in exactly the same way, using the Apple technical support site, check your iPad. This method works, but for some reason not everyone is able to check and figure out the model, so we will consider a few more ways:
So, we take the box with the iPad inside, which Ivan brought, and examine it, we are especially interested in the underside with the sticker. There are many details on this sticker, but the first line, highlighted in bold, is of interest, in our case it was indicated:
From the name it immediately becomes clear that Ivan has an iPad 2 (2nd generation) with 32 gigabytes of memory, the tablet must be black with Wi-Fi support and without an additional communication module (3G / CDMA). If the tablet was new and sealed in its native film packaging, then there would be less doubts, but since the iPad has been in use, the box may not be native, so we follow our advice and check if the packaging is native.
In our case, the box turned out to be native, and dispelled the remaining doubts about the iPad model. In our case, we were still able to identify the model using a sticker on the box, but not everyone succeeds. For example, many stickers simply say. iPad, as is the case with our other tablet, the first line of the sticker on the box looks like this:
and try, guess what this model is. The same situation worries the owners of iPad tablets, bought without a box or lost the box in the process of moving or other situations. Therefore, we move on to the second method.

IPhonefrom service In order to determine the iPad version using the special iPhonefrom service, we need:

- And the ability to determine the batch number
The Internet works, the batch number (Part No.) of our unrecognized in the first part of the iPad is MD368C / A. Go to the website iPhonefrom.com, enter our batch number (which is sometimes called the model number) into the line and press the button. Learn.

To completely blow your mind, I propose another short article where we examined the varieties of the iPad 2 tablet, it turned out that 2012 brought us slightly modified iPad 2 tablets, unlike the 2011 models.
How to find out your iPad model?
The first version of the tablet from Apple was presented at a presentation in San Francisco by the founder of the company, Steve Jobs, back in January 2010. Since then, the company has been updating the lineup of its tablets almost every year and it is no wonder that an ordinary user in 2019 can easily get confused in them.
So how do you pinpoint your iPad model exactly? The easiest thing is to look at the markings on your iPad’s box. But often the box is thrown away immediately after purchase or lost during operation. Therefore, we do not consider this option.
Check model by serial number
You can easily find out the exact model of your iPad through the official Apple website. To do this, go to the settings of your iPad → General → About this device and look at the Serial number item. Also, the serial number is always located on the back cover of each iPad. Ideally, they should match. The opposite may indicate a replacement of the case or motherboard of the device.
IPad serial number on the back cover
This serial number must be entered into the appropriate field on the above site and after a few seconds you will get the result on the screen. In addition to the device model itself, its main characteristics and the possibility of warranty service will be indicated.
