How to connect a laptop to a TV via wi-fi

What you need to connect a laptop to TV via Wi-Fi

Many people ask the question: how to connect a laptop to a TV via WI-FI? The main condition for the possibility of such a connection is the presence in the TV itself of Smart TV technology and a Wi-Fi module with support for Wi-Fi Direct and DLNA functions. The first allows you to connect a laptop to a TV directly, without using a home network and router. However, not all TVs (especially older models) can be connected to laptops in this way. The second technology. DLNA, makes it possible to go from the TV itself to a network storage (for example, a folder on the hard drive of a PC connected to a home network) and start playing multimedia content from it. viewing a photo or video. You can also launch a media server from the laptop itself with broadcast to the TV.

The difference between these two connection methods is quite significant and below we will tell you what is the difference and how to organize such connections and how to connect a laptop to a TV via WI-FI.

Connecting to a TV via DLNA

This type of connection consists in the fact that on a computer or laptop that is part of the home network, access is organized to certain folders where you place multimedia files. photos and videos. Only your TV can play them with its built-in player. A prerequisite for this is that the TV supports DLNA technology. a set of standards that allow devices connected to a home network to transmit and receive over various media content.

connect, laptop, wi-fi

This can be done both from an Android smartphone and tablet, as well as from a TV (playback functions only). The question also arises of how to synchronize a laptop with a TV via WI-FI. In general, everything happens automatically.

The main task is to organize a shared folder on a laptop. To do this, you need to make it available to other devices on your home network, and also assign permanent IP addresses in the router for gadgets connected to the network. This is necessary so that the TV does not have to scan the network every time in search of this folder.

To do this, on the laptop’s hard drive, create a shared folder named in English, for example, MediaTV. Go to the “Access” tab in its properties. Then click “Advanced settings”, put a tick next to the phrase “Open public access” and confirm the action by clicking “OK”.

If your TV with Smart TV is an old model and its system does not allow you to connect to devices on Windows OS, namely, the TV simply does not see the shared folder with files, there is another option to organize the broadcast of media content on its screen. But first you need to make sure that your TV is visible on your home network.

To do this, click on the “Network” icon in the Explorer on the left. After that, the devices available on the network will be displayed in the right pane. Now select a video file in MP4 format in any folder, right-click on it and select “Transfer to device” in the context menu, in our case to Samsung.

This will launch the Windows media server, which will display a list of files transferred to the TV. Don’t miss the request on the TV itself to play a file from an external source.

How to connect a laptop to a TV via Wi-Fi

Connecting a laptop to a TV via Wi-Fi wirelessly is a cherished dream of all online movie theater lovers and gamers. We will tell you how to do it quickly and without complicated settings.

Oddly enough, but not many people know that you can connect a laptop to a TV without wires in just a couple of mouse clicks. This will allow you to sit on the couch and broadcast your vacation photos or video to the big screen. You can also play your favorite games using not a small laptop display, but display the picture on a device with a huge diagonal. However, in the latter case, Honor says that the picture will be broadcast to the TV with a slight delay. When watching movies and photos, you will not notice this. Below we will give step-by-step instructions on how to connect a laptop to a TV via WI-FI.

Connecting to a TV via Wi-Fi Direct

This feature works well on modern TVs from the 5th generation, where manufacturers have already implemented unified wireless direct drivers. This is the so-called. connecting a second wireless monitor, where the TV acts as an external display device for everything that happens on the screen of your mobile device, such as a laptop or smartphone.

In the first case, you need to have Windows 7, 8 or 10. A home network is not required with this connection, and authentication and connection is carried out through a connection request on the TV screen itself.

Such a connection is convenient because you can see on the big screen everything that is done on the screen of your PC or laptop, including working in the browser, viewing photos or videos, as well as the process of playing. The only drawback here is a slight delay in displaying content on TV and slightly fewer colors than on a PC display.

How to connect a laptop to a TV via WI-FI? Making a Wi-Fi Direct connection is pretty straightforward. To do this, turn on your TV and laptop. Wi-Fi adapters must be activated on both devices.

Now on your Windows 10 laptop go to Start | Parameters | System | Display ”and on the right side under“ Multiple displays ”click on“ Connect to a wireless display ”. A vertical shutter with the “connect” menu and a list of detected devices will appear on the right side. In our case, this is Samsung 6 series (49). Click on the selected model, then on the TV itself, agree to the connection request. It should be noted that the connection may not happen on the first or even on the second attempt, since the computer needs time to transmit the TV signal encryption keys. But after the TV is connected to the laptop via WI-FI, you can broadcast the video even from another room.

In order to disable the transmission of the wireless video signal to the TV, click on “Connect to wireless display” again and click on the “Disconnect” button in the right curtain of the menu.

Connection using Wi-Fi adapters

However, such an extravagant solution will be justified if cable connection is almost impossible, such as for a video projector suspended from the ceiling. It is much cheaper and more reliable to use an HDMI connection and connect the laptop to the TV through the appropriate cable.

Works on the basis of Wi-Fi connection of all devices to the same network. over, devices can be completely different: from a tablet and a smartphone, ending with an X-box set-top box and printers. Suitable for both home and work use. The already well-known LG SmartShare and Samsung AllShare work on the basis of this system. To share files, each folder is opened separately on your computer. However, by default, the server looks for files in the root folders of the My Documents group.
  • Wi-Fi Direct is a system thanks to which two or more devices can directly connect to each other without an additional link. a router. It has a separate resemblance to Bluetooth, but many times higher in speed and quality of connection. Even if there is no internet, you can connect your laptop to the TV via WI-FI direct, creating a special home network.
  • WiDi is a system created by Intel for transferring data from smartphones, tablets, laptops and other portable devices to the Smart TV screen. With its help, you can transmit “surround” sound and view full-format videos (Full HD). The most suitable option for home theater.

  • Built-in Windows Media Center Extender.
  • Third party applications such as home media server.

The first option is a built-in feature in Windows 7 and 8. However, you still need to install it. In the seven it is done like this. Open the Start menu and type Windows Media Center in the search bar. From the search results, select the one you want and open it.

In Windows 8, the launch of the tool is slightly different. Move the mouse cursor to the upper right corner and in the menu that appears, start the search. Write down the name of the program and select the required program from the results. However, it is worth noting that in some cases this tool may not be present in operating system versions 8 and 8.1. If the search did not return any results, then it should be installed. If you are using licensed Windows 8, then this will not be a problem. Just go to the official Microsoft website and download the updates you want.

Further, in both cases, the program setting is done identically. In the program menu, select “Media attachment”. Next, you will be taken to a menu called “Install Media Extender”.

Wireless & DLNA

See the following about setting up a media server.

The easiest and most popular way to connect a laptop to a TV via Wi-Fi (wirelessly) is using DLNA technology. It is a simple set of standards that allow interoperable devices to exchange files (video, audio, and photos).

This standard does not work with Apple and BridgeCo gadgets. They have their own technology.

The technology allows you to exchange files over a local network. That is, when setting up on a TV, it will be possible to view the pre-allowed files that are on the PC.

With this method, you will not be able to watch movies online from your laptop and you will have to download them in advance. If this is the main purpose in connection, then it is recommended to go directly to the second method.

Miracast

This is a special technology that allows you to connect your computer to a TV or other devices wirelessly. The main thing is that both gadgets support this function. This technology is present only in Intel processors from the second generation and older. But even its presence does not guarantee that everything will work out.

The fact is that Windows support this function in different ways, which is why it is recommended to check in advance. To do this, you need to do the following:

  • Go to the settings on the TV. Go to the section that is related to the network or the Internet. If the list contains the Miracast line, then the device supports the technology, otherwise it will not work to connect to the laptop.
  • On the laptop, you need to open the parameters. From the menu on the left side of the screen, go to the section for projection to a computer. You can simply search for the word Miracast and it will open what you need. If the PC does not support this technology, there will be a red message, its absence indicates that the function is present.

If there is no support for this technology on one or two devices at once, then it is quite possible to purchase a Miracast receiver.

Connecting laptop to TV via Wi-Fi

Many modern TVs can be connected to a computer or laptop via Wi-Fi to view supported files. We will talk about this, as well as about some additional solutions later in this article.

Connecting laptop to PC

You can mainly connect via Wi-Fi Smart TV, but we will also consider means for a regular TV.

Miracast adapter

If you do not have a Smart TV, you can use a special Miracast adapter. This device can be of different models, but in any case, it requires HDMI on the TV and, if possible, a USB port.

Connect the Miracast adapter to the previously disconnected TV using the HDMI interface.

Connect the supplied cable to the device.

Connect the USB cable to a charger or an available port on your TV.

Use the “Input” or “Source” button on the TV remote.

Select HDMI port with Miracast adapter connected.

The information presented on the screen will be required in the future to configure the adapter.

Setting up your laptop

Using standard Windows tools, connect to the Wi-Fi network of the Miracast adapter.

  • Optionally, using the browser, you can change the operating mode of the device in the “Default Mode” block:
  • AirPlay. for transferring files via DLNA;
  • Miracast. for mirroring images from the laptop screen.
  • If you did everything correctly, then, as in the second capable, the TV will display the image from your monitor.
  • After following the steps above, turn on Miracast on your computer according to the instructions above. If everything was done correctly, the TV will display an image from the laptop.

    Miracast

Miracast technology allows you to use a Wi-Fi network to wirelessly transmit a signal from a laptop to a TV. Thanks to this approach, you can turn your Smart TV into a full-fledged monitor that displays or expands the laptop desktop.

    Setting up your TV

Most modern TVs that support Wi-Fi allow you to easily connect via Miracast.

Use the “Setting” button on the remote control to go to the TV settings.

Open the “Network” section and select “Miracast”.

In the next window, change the value to “ON”.

Subsequent steps must be performed on a laptop that supports the same technology.

    Miracast on laptop

We examined the process of using Miracast on a computer and laptop in a separate article using the example of Windows 10. If your laptop supports this connection, then after performing the above steps, the TV will display the image from the monitor.

It will be possible to customize the operation of the monitor through the “Screen Resolution” section or by pressing the “WinP” key combination on the keyboard.

    The local network

This approach will be a great solution to the task at hand if you are using a wireless TV. If the connection is correct, the TV will be able to view some, mainly multimedia data from the computer.

Note: We will consider only one TV model, but the settings of other Smart TVs are largely similar and differ only in the name of some items.

    Setting up your TV

First, you need to connect the TV to the same router that the laptop is connected to.

Through the presented menu, select the “Network” tab.

After selecting the “Network Connection” section, at the next stage, click the “Configure” button.

Select your Wi-Fi router from the list of presented networks.

In addition to the above, if your device has Wi-Fi Direct support, you can connect directly to the TV.

This step can be divided into two parts depending on the TV used and its requirements.

    Windows Media Player

To play media files from your library from laptop to TV, you need to apply special settings for Windows Media Player. Further actions should be performed only if the TV is connected without the manufacturer’s software.

On the top panel of Windows Media Player, expand the “Stream” list and check the box next to the items indicated in the screenshot.

Open the “Organize” list and select “Manage Libraries”.

Here you need to select the type of data you want to import.

Specify the desired directory and click the “Add folder” button.

Click on the “OK” button to save the settings.

After that, the data will appear in the library, which can be accessed from the TV.

Many Smart TV manufacturers require special software to be installed in order to transfer data. In our case, the Smart Share program is required, the download and installation process of which we discussed in another instruction.

After completing the installation, click the “Options” button at the top of the interface.

On the Service page, change the value to ON.

Switch to the “My Shared Files” section and click on the folder icon.

Through the window that opens, select one or more directories that contain the multimedia files you need. You can complete the selection by pressing the “OK” button.

After closing the window, the selected folders will appear in the list, which can be deleted using the icon on the toolbar.

  • Click on the “OK” button to finish working with the file manager.
  • Files can now be accessed from the TV.

    Play on TV

This step is the easiest. This is due to the fact that the necessary recommendations are usually added to the standard instructions for working with the TV.

Open the special section in the menu that stores files from your laptop. Usually its name corresponds to the previously installed software of the TV manufacturer.

On some TVs, you need to select a network connection through the “Source” menu.

  • After that, the screen will display data from your laptop or computer, which can be viewed.
  • The only limitation you may encounter when using this method is that the laptop must always be turned on. If the laptop is put into sleep or hibernation mode, streaming will be interrupted.

When connecting a laptop and TV via Wi-Fi, the disadvantage is the signal transmission delay, especially noticeable if you use the TV as a wireless monitor. Otherwise, this approach is not much inferior to the connection via HDMI.
