How to fix problems
When connecting a PC with a TV, the picture is not always immediately displayed on the screen, in some cases settings are required.
- Go to “Display Settings” on the laptop.
- Then click “Detect” for the operating system to find the TV already connected via HDMI.
- In the “Display Manager” menu that appears, you need to find and connect a TV (a shortcut with the inscription TV). Click on it. If there is no icon, you need to check the wire connection. With the condition that everything is in order, the same image of the 2nd device will appear near the schematic drawing of the 1st monitor.
- For correct operation, in the menu that appears, select “Display desktop 1: 2”.
The term “Hot Plug” (English HotPlug). means switching ( shutdown or connection) electronic equipment during its operation without disconnecting the power supply.
There is a similar term “hot swap” when it comes to computers. meaning disconnecting / connecting / replacing system components, again, without first de-energizing.
It is highly discouraged to connect equipment and components “hot”, and speaking of HDMI equipment, it is strictly prohibited.!
Device interfaces damaged by hot plugging are referred to as burnt or burnt out. and their internal components are punctured or burnt.
The reverse term is ” Cold Connect “(Cold Swap). that is, all (re) connections are made after disconnecting the power to the devices and removing the voltage (residual potential).
Despite the fact that many users do not bother to disconnect devices from the outlet when switching, nevertheless, common practice and prescriptions of safety rules recommend carrying out any switching exactly “to cold”! Perhaps someone will want to object and point to the specifications of a number of interfaces or instructions for some devices, where it is said in black and white about the possibility of “hot plugging”. However, with regard to HDMI equipment, this can end very badly
No sound on TV
If the TV connected via the HDMI connector does not play audio, then you must specify it as the main playback device by default:
- To do this, right-click on the sound shortcut in the notification menu, find the item “Playback devices”. Laptop with TV must be connected with a cable.
- A new window will appear, where all devices for playback are indicated and the TV icon is shown.
- Right-click on the TV device.
- Check the box next to “Use as default”.
- Then click “OK”. Audio will start playing on the TV.
Making adjustments to the picture and sound settings is not always a guarantee that both devices will work at 100%, since the problem is sometimes located in other elements of the laptop or directly in the connected TV.
Determine the type of cable by marking
A good wire, made according to the standard, must be marked with the appropriate markings. cable type and protocol generation.
If the packaging is lost, and the marking on the cable itself cannot be deciphered, you can use Google and find the product by model or serial number.
A little about modern HDMI cords
To make life easier for ordinary users, today the industry has reduced the entire variety of cords under consideration to 5 five basic types: regular or high-speed, each of which can support an Ethernet connection or not. The 5th type is highly specialized and is used by motorists to connect electronics in the car.
All! Each of the cords that can be found on the market are one of these types. They can also differ in the version of the supported protocol. 1.3 transmits a picture in Full HD size, but does not transmit sound. 1.4 can still transmit sound.
2.0 is rational to use in a home theater or multimedia center. For the needs of the computer user, model 1.3 is sufficient. It is this version of the port that continues to be most often used on a computer (on a video card or on the motherboard itself), as well as on a laptop.
Please note that it is impossible to find out the variation of the wire in Windows, since it is a switching element and is not recognized by the system.
Let’s consider several ways how to determine the parameters of interest to us.
What to do to prevent the HDMI port from burning out
In fact, you just need to follow a certain order of actions when connecting or disconnecting devices. Although the HDMI standard supports hot plugging, i. E. you can connect without turning off the devices to be connected; nevertheless, this should not be done. In the case of connecting a camcorder or any other device powered by its own battery, you can connect to hot, but in the case of connecting a computer to a TV, this is unacceptable!
How to Fix HDMI Not Working on Laptop Windows 10? [5 Methods]
Firstly, because half of the supply voltage is present on the computer case, and secondly, if a cable TV antenna is connected to the TV, then the “ground” on the side of the TV has zero potential. When you connect a computer and a TV with an HDMI cable, the current flows in the cable due to the potential difference, which is deadly for the ports. And since HDMI port is not protected by additional circuits and its contacts go directly to the chip, then this chip simply burns out. With laptops, everything is usually fine, but it is better to remove the power supply cord when connecting the cable.
So, here is the correct connection sequence:
- Turn off the computer and TV OUT OF THE SOCKET. Simple shutdown is NOT ENOUGH.
- If cable TV is connected to the TV, then we ALWAYS turn it off.
- We connect or disconnect the HDMI cable (depending on what we need)
- We connect the cable antenna
- Plug in sockets
- Everything, now you can turn on
But all the same, HDMI inputs and outputs will not be immune from failure. For maximum safety, your computer and TV must be grounded!
Causes of HDMI interfaces burnout
Unfortunately, the HDMI interface is extremely sensitive to all kinds of electrical discharges and when “hot plugged”, with a high degree of probability, you can burn the HDMI port or chip of a TV, monitor, video card or any other HDMI device.
Because of what, a device with an HDMI interface can burn out when connected “hot”?
The fact is that electrical discharges are constantly accumulating on clothes and the human body (static electricity). These discharges, when connecting one device to another, enter the connectors and cause damage to the equipment. The second reason for damage to HDMI when connected “hot” is the presence of sufficiently high potentials on the device cases (about 100 volts). At the moment of connecting the devices, potential equalization (discharge) occurs, as a result of which the equipment is damaged.
Unfortunately, this problem has been known from the very beginning of the HDMI interface and is a consequence of the optimized circuitry and the overall cheapness of the components. And, which is not a little upsetting, all these shortcomings will be inherent in new versions of the interface.
Absolutely all devices with an HDMI interface of absolutely all manufacturers are subject to this problem. Unfortunately, neither the big name of the brand, nor the high cost of the device guarantee 100% safety in this matter. Therefore, if you do not want to say goodbye to a device or a tidy sum of money, you should follow the connection rules unquestioningly!
No sound through HDMI on TV due to hardware issues
The second most common reason for no sound when connecting a computer to an external monitor / TV via HDMI is a hardware issue. It can manifest itself in two cases:
Defective HDMI wire. It is possible that the wire through which the devices are connected was previously pinched or its contact base was damaged. There is a possibility that there is a partial wire break or other problem;
Selecting the correct playback device
When an external information output device such as a TV or monitor is connected to a computer via HDMI, the Windows operating system should automatically determine that the sound will be broadcast through the connected source by default. If this did not happen for one reason or another, the user must independently assign a TV as a sound reproduction device. For this:
In the lower right corner of the screen, click on the speaker icon (“Digital Audio”) with the right mouse button and select “Playback Devices” in the window that opens;
Important: If you do not see a connected monitor or TV in the list of available playback devices, right-click anywhere in the empty space and check the boxes “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disconnected devices”. Try to find a connected monitor / TV among them.
In a situation where even among the hidden devices it was not possible to find a TV / monitor connected via HDMI, you can try the steps described below.
No sound on TV when connecting a computer via HDMI
The HDMI standard allows you to easily display image and sound from a laptop or computer to an external monitor or TV. To transfer the picture and sound, it is enough to connect the computer to the device via a cable. But, as with any other data transfer standard, problems with HDMI can arise, including due to incorrect Windows settings. One of the common mistakes that users have to face is the lack of sound on the TV when connecting a computer to it via HDMI. There are several ways to fix this problem, which will be discussed below.
Please note: Before proceeding with the tips below, make sure that the lack of sound on the TV when the computer is connected to it via HDMI is not related to the settings of the TV itself. Often the reason is quite trivial. the TV sound is reduced to zero or the “Silence Mode” (Mute) is on.
Installing drivers for audio output via HDMI
Another reason why there is no sound through HDMI on the TV is the lack of drivers. Most often, this problem occurs if, when installing video card drivers, the user manually selected the components to be installed and disabled the installation of drivers for HDMI.
You can find out if the drivers for outputting sound via HDMI to your computer are installed in the device manager. This requires:
Press the WindowsR key combination on the keyboard and write the devmgmt.msc command in the window that opens;
If only a sound card is listed in the list of available audio devices, you need to download drivers from the video card to your computer and install those components that are responsible for transmitting sound through HDMI. To do this, go to the Intel, NVIDIA or AMD website and download the latest video card drivers, then run their installation. At the installation stage, select manual mode and be sure to check “HD Audio Driver” among the available drivers.
Please note: The driver responsible for audio output via HDMI is called “HD Audio Driver” on the NVIDIA graphics card. On other maps, it may be called differently.
After installing the necessary drivers, restart your computer and try to reconnect it via HDMI to the TV.
The laptop cannot see the TV via HDMI. Repair in St. Petersburg
If the laptop does not see the TV via HDMI, then first of all pay attention to the physical condition of the cable and the reliability of the connection. Try using a different wire to make sure the cable is not the problem.
If the cable is physically sound and the connection is established correctly, then check the connection settings.

System not configured
To transfer an image to a TV, you need not only select source, but also set up a screen on the laptop itself:
Right click on the desktop. Open the “Screen Resolution” section.
On some laptop models, the second screen is activated by the FnF8 key combination (instead of F8, there may be another button from the F1-F12 row). After this setting, the laptop desktop should appear on the TV screen. If the sound continues to be played through the laptop speakers, make additional adjustments:
Click on the volume icon in the tray and open “Playback Devices”.
If after selecting a signal source and setting up the system, there is still no image, check the drivers and parameters of the video card.
Graphics card problems
Right-click on the Computer icon, open the Management section and go to Device Manager. Find your graphics card and make sure it works fine.
Download the latest graphics card drivers for your laptop model from the manufacturer’s official website. After installing them, go to the video card control panel, which is launched from the system tray. Find the section that allows you to install multiple monitors, and through it select the display mode on the screen.
No source selected
When connecting a laptop via HDMI, you must correctly indicate the signal source on the TV, otherwise the image from the laptop’s desktop will not be transmitted. Find the source control button on the remote.
If the TV has two HDMI ports, then the connector to which you connected the laptop should be selected. If the laptop is connected to HDMI2, choose HDMI2.
Physical damage to the port
If no manipulation of the settings helps, and the laptop does not connect to the TV, then, perhaps, the HDMI output on the laptop does not work. Problems can also be on the side of the TV, the source can only be determined empirically.
By the way, it is worth connecting the cable to the switched off equipment. The specifications of the HDMI standard indicate that it supports “hot plugging”, but it is better to play it safe and turn off your laptop and TV beforehand.
How to set up and enable HDMI on a laptop
If on TV it is enough to simply indicate the signal source, then on a PC you sometimes have to tweak the connection a little. Before connecting the laptop to the TV, you can select the display type. Usually, by default, it will simply duplicate the source screen. But other types can be specified as well. In versions of Windows 7 and higher, this can be done by pressing the Win P keys. A window will immediately open in which you can select connection options.
Calls up the projector connection menu. There are only 4 of them:
- just a computer. The signal will not be transmitted to the TV, but only to the laptop screen;
- duplicate. The TV screen will be exactly the same as the PC screen;
- expand. This type adds another screen on which it will be possible to separately launch, for example, a video or open a website, while another application will be used on a laptop;
- just a projector. The signal will not be repeated on PC, but will only go to TV.
TV resolution usually adjusts automatically. But you can also change it manually in the operating system screen settings.
Where is the HDMI input on laptop and TV
On TVs, the connector can be located either on the back or on the side panel. It is not difficult to determine it, since it is unique, and you will not be able to connect another cable there.
The connector is usually labeled, so it is easy to find it. The HDMI input on a laptop is also not particularly standardized, so it can be anywhere. But most often found on the back of the device.
Laptop does not see HDMI cable from TV
Such a situation can arise in only two cases: a physical malfunction of the cable or connector and a problem with the video card drivers.
The cable also has its own tensile strength, so it can be damaged. To calculate whether the wire from the laptop to the TV is really damaged, you can try to connect another one. You also need to make sure that the versions are correct and choose the correct cable. With the connector, everything is more difficult, it is rather difficult to establish whether it is really the case at home. If you just try to switch the cable to another available connector. With a video card, everything is easier. it is worth updating the drivers or, conversely, rolling them back to an older version.
TV does not see laptop via HDMI
There may be few reasons why the TV does not see the laptop via HDMI either. The first thing that comes to mind is an incorrectly installed signal source. On some models with 2 or more connectors, you can get confused and choose the wrong one. It is worth checking the correctness of the choice. There is also a possibility that HDMI may not work properly due to Smart TV. The situation is rare, but it does happen. It is worth trying to update the software. In all other cases, suspicion can only fall on a malfunction of the cable or the connector itself.
What to do if the laptop does not connect to the TV via HDMI
Yes, connection problems can arise, but they can and should be dealt with. Consider the two most common cases.
Setting up your TV for HDMI connection
To switch the TV to the HDMI signal reception mode, you need to explicitly indicate this in the menu. Usually the remote has buttons like Source or Input. In the TV menu, you need to look for items with the name “Signal Source” or “Datsource”. Naturally, the setup must be done after the HDMI cable is connected to the TV and laptop.
Types of HDMI cables
There are three main form factors that an HDMI cable can run in. The first is a simple type A with 19 pins and is used in full-size devices such as computers, TVs and set-top boxes. This is the most common type. Mini-HDMI type C is a more compact connector that is used in no less compact devices. smartphones, tablets, netbooks and sometimes video cards. It is also equipped with 19 contacts and in its characteristics is in no way inferior to its “older” brother.
Variety of connectors. Micro-HDMI Type D is the smallest connector in the entire family. Despite its size, it also contains 19 pins and fully complies with the specifications. Along with the mini-version, it is used in smartphones, tablets, camcorders and other portable devices. In fact, there are two more types. B and E. The first is only in the official specification, and has never been used in real devices, since it has 26 contacts and is rather large. The second is quite rare. it is used in car multimedia systems. Equipped with 19 pins and has additional shielding to prevent interference from other vehicle devices. There are a huge number of adapters and adapters for other types of connectors that allow you to output an image from a laptop via HDMI, for devices such as old TV or PC.
