Can ipad pro replace laptop

Other systems

But if the iPad is not able to serve as a full-fledged replacement for a laptop, so maybe tablets that run other systems. Android and Windows can do it?

In the case of Android, the situation is indeed somewhat more attractive. So, the user has the ability to connect “flash drives” (in most cases, a simple adapter will be required), and if he has certain knowledge, also external disks with optical drives. In addition, there are more possibilities from a software point of view, access to the file system is open.

However, an Android tablet is not capable of becoming a full-fledged laptop either; all the same, the user will have to face a number of limitations. Mainly caused by the lack of specific software.

ipad, replace, laptop

But a Windows tablet is a completely different matter. Starting with the 8th version of this system, manufacturers really have the opportunity to create tablets that, when connected to a keyboard and mouse, can be used as a full-fledged laptop. Also on sale there are many transformers with a detachable keyboard. By the way, the latter is often used not just for typing, but also plays the role of a docking station with additional connectors and a built-in hard drive. In addition, the presence of a full-fledged Windows (but not Windows RT!) Allows you to install any software designed for this system. If only there is enough device performance.

Also, many models of Windows tablets allow you to connect not only a keyboard, but also a monitor. That is, the tablet may well play the same role as the system unit of the desktop. If necessary, you simply disconnect all peripherals and remain with one compact device.

True, here, too, everything is far from ideal. For example, Windows tablets usually have a slightly shorter battery life. And their performance is somewhat lower. In addition, Windows is still not as easy to use in tablet mode as iOS or Android.

We use an iPad instead of a laptop. How real is it?

Lately, we have been surrounded by too many electronic devices. Many users have already acquired a laptop, smartphone, and even a tablet in addition. Not surprisingly, some of them are wondering if it is possible to reduce this amount by using a tablet as a replacement for a laptop.

Turning an iPad into a laptop

Undoubtedly, the idea of using a tablet as a replacement for a laptop looks very attractive. However, how feasible is this in the case of the iPad? It all depends on your needs.

You can easily connect an external Bluetooth keyboard to your iPad, making it easier to enter large amounts of text. To do this, you can, for example, use a regular Apple wireless keyboard. The only thing that will be needed in this case is a stand for the tablet (by the way, even an ordinary student’s stand for books will perfectly cope with this role). This approach is not very elegant. But at the same time, you use a full-fledged keyboard, that is, the usability increases.

But that’s not all. On the market, you can find keyboards that connect directly to the iPad, after which the device begins to look like a full-fledged laptop. Typical example. ClamCase Pro.

But with connecting a mouse, everything is much more complicated. To do this, you will have to first jailbreak, and then purchase the BTC Mouse Trackpad application (it will cost 5). However, as practice shows, the absence of a mouse does not cause any particular inconvenience.

You will also have to forget about flash drives. The most you can get is their limited use with the Camera Connection Kit. There are also special external drives that can connect to the iPad over a wireless network. However, in many cases, the inability to connect an external drive will not be a big headache for users who are already accustomed to working with “clouds”.

But the sad part is the software. If your tasks are limited only to a set of texts, spreadsheets, skype and the Internet, then you will not experience any restrictions when working. But it will be impossible to solve specific problems. Needless to say, even some mundane activities may become less convenient.

In addition, you need to understand that the very specifics of working on a tablet are different. You will not be able to open several windows at once, you always have one application in front of you. Having to constantly switch between programs can be annoying. Although, on the other hand, this approach is convenient for the opportunity to fully concentrate on solving the task at hand, without being distracted by various “temptations”.

Thus, the iPad can replace a laptop only if you do not have any difficult tasks in front of you. For example, this is an ideal tool for a writer. a kind of typewriter with full access to the Web.

The advantages of this solution include portability and the ability to operate for a very long time from a single battery charge. In addition, you can turn off the keyboard at any time and get a regular tablet. However, before deciding on such a replacement, weigh the pros and cons well. This option is also quite possible. to use the iPad as a laptop only during long trips, when carrying a full-fledged laptop may not be the most convenient activity.

Unfortunately, the iPad in its current state is not capable of becoming a full-fledged replacement for a laptop. Unless the user has too large requests. That is, it uses the device only for typing, working with spreadsheets, communication and e-mail. For more serious tasks, such a solution is definitely not suitable. The same can be said for Android tablets, which still offer their users a few more options.

Windows tablets are the closest to being able to become a full-fledged replacement. Here, too, you will have to face a number of small problems. But for the most part they are quite solvable. However, it is better to purchase not a separate tablet, but immediately a transformer, then you do not have to waste time purchasing a special keyboard.

Can MacBook Replace Your iPad Pro?

There has been a lot of talk on the net lately about the MacBook Pro and that this thing could theoretically replace the grandest, thinnest and lightest iPad Pro. There can be no doubt. nothing in the world can replace the new product from Apple. But if you really want to, then you should consider the feasibility of changing the device and operating system from all sides.

Work with text

For those who often work with text and numbers, having the keyboard and cursor control, which appeared in iOS 9 “two-in-one”, is much more pleasant than hearing the clatter of keys and click of the trackpad at night. Do not forget about the universal and understandable language of all times and peoples. Emoji. Does anyone want to constantly monitor the three keyboard layouts on a MacBook? How about memorizing keyboard shortcuts as opposed to visual icons on the iPad? This is madness.

Conclusion: Typing on iPad Pro is more convenient.

Photography

Everything is clear here. How will zoo animals look at you if you try to capture them with the MacBook’s iSight camera? If this does not bother you at all, think about the quality of the photos. Perhaps, after a long witchcraft in photo editors, it will still be possible to see something in the pictures from the laptop‘s 1.3-megapixel camera. Only now, the definitely landscape orientation of the MacBook screen will dislocate the hands anyway when trying to take a good selfie.

The capabilities of the MacBook software also impose limitations on how you work with photos. Only a few major applications like Pages, Mail, and Keynote can import photos into a document or letter properly. For everyone else, you need an incomprehensible drag-and-drop. It’s different in iPad Pro. a couple of touches and a photo in place!

Conclusion: You cannot take photos and work with them on a MacBook.

Working hours

Despite being large and nearly three times the weight of the iPad Pro, no MacBook Pro can boast comparable battery life. This raises questions about the overall performance of the Intel platform. And the running Chrome browser will completely discharge the Macbook in a couple or three hours.

Most modern Macbook Pros use a MagSafe 2 charger. Try to find one quickly. Does not work? And almost everyone has a Lightning cable. In addition, iPad Pro charges great with compact portable batteries, so you can easily take them with you in your bag.

Conclusion: MacBook Pro is not a competitor of iPad Pro in energy efficiency and charger compatibility.

Convenience

Seriously, have you ever tried standing up on a MacBook? And walking around the room? The “L”.shaped shape of the laptop limits usage scenarios to a minimum. either sitting or lying down. It is impossible to cope with a MacBook with one hand. Here you need Honor and the weight of the device too (for example, a 15-inch MacBook Pro weighs over 2 kilograms, which is almost three iPad Pros). How long can a fragile girl hold such an unbalanced laptop in her hands without accidentally dropping it on the tiled floor??

Performance

Who cares about performance if iPad Pro doesn’t even have Activity Monitor with constantly freezing processes and apps? So what do you really want when buying a MacBook Pro? Yes, you get better performance, but not much, and all for a lot more money. If it’s all about numbers, then in Geekbench tests, the 13-inch MacBook Pro in 2015 scores 3209 points in single-core mode and 6741 points in multi-core mode. But the iPad Pro gives you 3225 and 5475 points in the same modes, respectively.

Conclusion: There is parity, but the iPad Pro is still better, because it is cheaper.

Summing up, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that such parameters as light weight, affordable price, great touch screen, ease of use of applications instead of opening websites in a browser, the presence of LTE, gorgeous speakers for watching TV shows on the couch. all this makes the iPad Pro unprecedented. unique device. And no MacBook Pro can replace it.

First iPad Pro: Giant iPhone?

The creators of this monster had only one task, but an urgent one: to stop the fall in iPad sales. While sales of other tablets dwindled, the iPad had to do a brilliant and incredible flip and go in the opposite direction. It was believed that no one except Apple was capable of this. Apple of 2015 also failed.

The largest iPad ever, with more screen pixels than the Retina MacBook Pro, with a CPU nearly as powerful as a small UltraBook, and a GPU that surpassed all the Iris and Iris Pros in Broadwell. Masterpiece! Apple engineers and technical managers have proven once again that they are the best in the world. But there was something wrong with the setting of tasks.

The demand for mobile devices turned out to be a non-renewable resource. Excitement and enthusiasm led to its multiple overspending, and it dried up. This could not but happen in order to start thinking about it in advance, at least when summing up the results of the holiday quarter of 2013 (the first fiscal quarter of 2014), when a record number of iPads were sold in three months: 26.04 million units.

Fanfare, awards, legitimate pride: “we could do it without Steve!”, And the conviction that it will always be that way, that in the first fiscal quarter of 2015 (October-December 2014) 30 million will be sold, and by the holiday season of 2019 in the production target collectors in Shenzhen will have 50 million of them, but the release of additional runs will force these unfortunate people to recycle even on weekends. And suddenly. recession.

And the iPad Pro was just too good. Not without flaws, including very serious ones, only one of which was fatal. It surpassed the third Microsoft Surface Pro, and competed on an equal footing with the fourth. But the iPad Pro was not something fundamentally new. and it was the worst.

A little about the monster itself

For all its contradictions, from an engineering point of view, this is a real masterpiece. Its system-on-a-chip, the Apple A9X, had the most powerful mobile processor in 2015. The same Twister, boosted to 2.25 Gigahertz. The 12-core GPU in the SoC was superior to any integrated graphics in Broadwell, and looked quite decent even against the background of graphics integrated in Skylake.

The power of the “engines” was combined with a touching concern for economy. What is it worth at least adjusting the screen redrawing frequency depending on the context. And the screen itself was beyond praise.

4 speakers, very high quality, irreplaceable weapon against neighbors in apartment buildings with poor sound insulation (very loud). Almost reasonable. At any position of the iPad in space, low frequencies are reproduced by the speakers that are below.

The front and rear cameras are like the iPad Air 2. They were called “morally outdated,” but I think it’s gone to use the world’s most monstrous iPad as a photo or video camera. Only if it bakes, but high-quality pictures or videos, in which case, were still guaranteed. Thank you for having them. Anything cooler would be overkill.

4GB LPDDR4 (3,200MHz), NVMe to speed up SSD access, and more. It tore in the tests of rivals for the flag of the Soviet Air Force, but its specifications had nothing to do with its success or failure. If interested, I can write about them, separately and another time.

At the beginning of sales, there were two iPad Pro models in the assortment: iPad6,7. only WI-FI and iPad6,8. WI-FICellular; and only three options. iPad6,7 was offered with 32 and 128 GB of flash memory, for 799 and 999 dollars. iPad6,8 was offered in only one variant, with 128 GB, for 1,079.

But, for the first time in the history of Apple tablets, the iPad itself was not enough. Something was missing. This something was not included in the delivery set, and was purchased at its own expense. How do you want? “You buy our tablets badly, we are losing money, you pay!”

Can iPad Pro replace a laptop?

Steve, once upon a time, said that he could.

Even the very first iPad. And it happened: everything for which most users had previously needed a domesticated computer, the first iPad was already doing with unsurpassed ease and ease. Consume content, wherever, however, it was a breakthrough. Sales volumes confirmed this.

But now it was about something else. Not about ordinary people who have been well for a long time.

Looks like Tim and his team really believed what they were saying. Why else would they have suggested to experts and journalists to put down laptops and use iPad Pro instead of them for a week. Despite the fact that iOS 9 (even with all its innovations “for iPad”) was too limited for any more or less serious professional use, and its innovations had not yet reached third-party vital applications.

The result was predictable. The legends of computer journalism tried the iPad Pro on themselves, and the answer was a polite but firm no. It took many of them one day to come to this conclusion. Among the simply popular journalists, some preferred the iPad Pro, and explained why. if the iPad Pro threatened someone’s interests, competitors would pay their author a lot of money for these explanations and ask them to write more.

But the giant iPad didn’t bother anyone. In optimistic forecasts, it was assumed that in the holiday quarter of 2015 (aka the first fiscal quarter of 2016) Apple will sell 3-4 million iPad Pros. The average forecast promised 2.0-2.5 million units.

Can the iPad Pro REPLACE your Laptop?

But the most pessimistic forecasts “won”: for half of November and December 2015, Apple sold a little less than one and a half million iPad Pros. In total, between October and December of that year, 16.12 million iPads were sold. 5.30 million less than it took to stop the fall.

And one more thing: experts have calculated that on each iPad Pro “apple” welded about 200. For Apple, especially when it comes to iOS devices, this is “everything”. An attraction of unthinkable generosity. Failed…

Breaking all the commandments

iPad in A4 size? Steve was against it, because such a device is uncomfortable to hold in one hand, and if held with both hands, the central area of the screen is inaccessible to the fingers.

Pencil? Steve was opposed for a number of reasons, including the fact that the stylus would be very easy to lose.

Steve has never authorized the release of a product that closely resembles the original on the market leading and successful product, without adding a single drop of branded “madness”, which would be the only one that could give a chance in such a situation.

For three years now, no one has come up with anything radically new in mobile devices. Because there was no such opportunity, and everything that could be thought of had already been invented and embodied in iron, glass and plastic?

One of the rules of mathematics (!) Says: “you cannot say that something is not there, you can always answer that you were looking badly”.

Periphery

Most likely I’m wrong, but if the Apple Pencil were included with the iPad Pro, there would be a million or a half more in the 2015 holiday season. But alas.

The stylus was a full-fledged electronic device based on a 32-bit Cortex-M3 with a clock frequency of 32 MHz and 64 kilobytes of flash memory.

Bluetooth 4.1 was used to interact with the outside world. And instead of an electronic version of the eraser, the back of the stylus, under a cute cap, hid the LIghtning plug used to charge the device. A full gas station was enough for 12 hours of operation. The stylus was charged in a slightly unexpected way: it had to be plugged into the Lightning connector of the iPad Pro.

It took a couple of hours to fully recharge the tiny stylus battery, but to draw another half hour, the stylus had to be charged for 15 seconds.?

Physical dimensions. length 176 mm, diameter 8.9 mm, weight. 21 grams. It felt familiar and comfortable in the hand: no worse than a regular pencil.

Cost 99. Like the 3rd generation Apple TV. Author’s work!

Disadvantages? Firstly, the stylus was not attached at all (and did not hold) on the iPad Pro case, which in the field could lead to tragic accidents. The magnet was saved on money, or it was contrary to some strict design principles. I don’t know. But if you let him go into free rolling on the table, he always stopped in the same position. With logo and model name at the top.

Secondly, before offering this device to professionals, it would be worth trying it out on them. Apparently, they also saved on this. The professionals rejected it: the reaction time, accuracy and everything else with this device did not suit them. There were more expensive solutions on the market that the Apple Pencil couldn’t compete with.

For hobbyists, for those who have a bad habit of drawing something from time to time, and for professionals in the fields of science and technology not related to graphics, the Apple Pencil was almost perfect. Schemes, contours, graphs, plans of areas of the earth’s surface, other illustrations for drafts, cartoons. Useful thing.

There was also a keyboard. Waterproof. Full size. Which one hated, others extolled, but it was quite convenient to print with its help, this is a fact. If not for long.

The keyboard of the main competitor (MS Surface Pro), it was inferior to the devastating score.

Can the iPad Pro replace a laptop?

“Can the iPad Pro replace a laptop?”. you can find many similar reviews on the Internet. Plainly, this question is even ahead of the phrase “The New iPhone Killer”, applied to every spectacular announcement of Android smartphones. Pavel Lomakin spoke about his impressions of using the new iPad Pro and figured out who and why might need a powerful, modern and expensive Apple tablet computer

Given: iPad Pro 2020, which comes in two sizes: 11 and 12.9 inches, for the 11-inch version without LTE and 128 GB storage up to 146,000 rubles for the 12.9-inch model with LTE and 1 TB of internal storage.

Thought He will save you time. And paper

Remember the times when you were asked to sign documents and send them back by email? It was required to print a file (there must still be a printer), sign and then scan (here we are already talking about a scanner or an all-in-one printer). Now all you have to do is open the pdf file (or convert from docx) and sign with Apple Pencil. over, the signature may already be saved in the smartphone’s memory. just add it to the desired column and scale it with your fingers. Convenient on the road when the “pencil” is left in the office or at home.

And so about everything in the iPad Pro. sketches and sketches made on it can be immediately sent to your interior designer or edited and corrected in previously sent files. iPad Pro is a kind of new tool for big bosses: margins, handwriting recognition, and more. Yes, some people still prefer to write by hand. Well, in the update that iPadOS 14 will receive this fall, it will be possible to instantly convert handwritten text and even symbols into digital words and signs, moreover, in almost any application: notes, search engine, browser, shopping list. And you will be in trend for sustainability.

“But almost all tablets with a stylus can do this, and any iPad (even a mini) works with an Apple Pencil,” you say, and you will be partly right. Firstly, we will not venture to assert with respect to other tablets: most of the stylus, “smart pens” and other “non-pens” do not differ in almost imperceptible input lag, as is the case with the Pencil, and the text written by them often does not pass for handwritten text, “ like on paper “.

Secondly, Apple Pencil is magnetic and “lives” on the end of the iPad Pro, not in the case or the bottom of your bag, plus it charges automatically every time it is magnetized to the tablet case, and not through the connector of your iPad, which is useful to you. for anything else.

Thought The device is quite unpretentious. And saves the nerves of the user

Especially during flights. No long removal of the laptop from the case and opening at the request of security personnel. just touch the screen of the gadget to show that this is a tablet and not something else. A new episode of the series or the long-awaited emails with closing documents for the deal can also be downloaded from the plane (thanks to the built-in LTE) before take off. And nothing will darken the flight. Think about how many times you or someone nearby spilled drinks on your (or someone else’s!) Table. The Smart Keyboard Folio is spill-resistant, making it comfortable to fly. With the option to watch videos in a separate window, you can continue to work on documents or write an important email while you watch the next episode on AppleTV or Netflix.

For two months, the tablet did not let me down: no freezes, application crashes, camera glitches. The device seems to work even more stable than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. How long does he work? Apple claims about 10 hours. On the ground, the tablet works for about one (daylight) day with average loads. In general, the impression is comparable to the 2018 model (although there is information that the battery is a little “thinner” compared to the previous version of the iPad Pro). Feels like the MacBook Pro 13, which lasts an average of 10 hours with Wi-Fi connected. A big plus for the iPad Pro is that it fully charges in just an hour and a half. Another plus. you can charge your smartphone, headphones, camera or even smartwatch directly from iPad Pro.

Thought Constructor for four devices

You can assemble at least four full-fledged devices from the iPad Pro. Accessories will help with this. Add a Smart Folio cover to iPad Pro and take your tablet with you on the go. Replace it with the aforementioned Smart Keyboard Folio to work like a laptop on the road. Switch to the new Magic Keyboard for working at your desk, from anywhere. Or connect your iPad Pro to your 4K TV with a USB-C cable and connect a wireless keyboard and mouse. no longer limited by tablet screen diagonal.

This is a complete desktop. The last two transformations are worth discussing separately. iPad works with external keyboards and mice (trackpeds), such as those that work with the iMac. So you don’t even need to get used to it. If you have worked with an external monitor before (you had a Mac Pro, Mac mini, or used an additional monitor in the office), simply connect the tablet to it via the USB-C connector, using an optional 0 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable 8 m or via a USB-C to HDMI multiport digital AV-adapter (if the monitor does not have USB-C). as an option, your tablet will have another free USB-C connector for charging or connecting external storage devices. flash drives and SSDs. With the introduction of the file manager in iOS 13, reading and writing them became possible. It is noteworthy that from some modern monitors with USB-C, iPad Pro will be charged in parallel and. When organizing such a scheme, the tablet itself can be put to the side or placed on a beautiful metal stand.

The second version of the desktop. It is suitable for those who do not want to bother with connecting all the above peripherals, but simply want to open the iPad cover and get started. this is possible with the Magic Keyboard. iPad Pro attaches itself to the lid and levitates above the keyboard. You can slightly change the angle of the “screen”, but open the design to the maximum, like most laptops, and work with the computer on your knees, you will not be able to: this is only a desktop solution. It is noteworthy that the Magic Keyboard hinge mechanism has an additional USB-C port for direct charging of the iPad Pro. the cable will not come out of the tablet, but noticeably lower, at the level of the surface on which you are working. Use the vacated port of the iPad Pro itself as you wish: charge your smartphone or headphones from it, connect external drives like the Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD up to 2 TB or the G-Drive Mobile SSD. Just imagine: in total, together with the space of the iPad Pro, you will manage 3 TB of memory.

Keyboard. Since at the same time with the announcement of the iPad Pro itself, we were also shown the Magic Keyboard, this is a real “laptop” keyboard and with a price tag comparable to the initial iPad and iPad mini, so it is worth talking about it separately. The key layout (especially on the 12.9-inch tablet version) is almost exactly the same as on the new MacBooks, and each button is made with the latest technology

“Scissors”, as it is called in Apple. it is more reliable than the previously used “butterfly”. Five years ago, using a butterfly, Apple reduced the height of the buttons by 40%, but some users experienced sticky keys. This was caused both by dust getting under the keys and by the general deficiencies of the mechanism. The minimal design differences in the returned “scissors” made the keys more reliable and just as thin.

The Magic Keyboard purchased in Russia will be fully adapted to enter Russian and English characters (there are even more buttons in it than in the American version, so you need to buy in Russia). You will have to get used to changing the language through a special key, and not by pressing CMD Space, otherwise the combination of buttons. taking a screenshot or setting Russian quotes (“”), as well as gestures on the trackpad are identical to what you do on a MacBook.

Of course, 31,000 rubles for the version for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is two to three times more expensive than the keyboards for tablets of some competitors. But it is also worth understanding that if such “similarities” of other keyboards, like the tablets themselves, look very “geeky”, then with the new iPad Pro suspended from the keyboard, one can imagine a (not poor) student sitting in a cafe, and a co-working (successful) creative, and a CEO of a large company spending time waiting for a flight or working on board a private jet. Magic KeyBoard provides a complete computing experience, not “some kind of compromise.” And given the number of devices the tablet can interact with, this is a serious workstation.

At the recent WWDC developer conference, Apple announced the imminent transition of its entire line of computers to its own processors. The decision looks logical, because smartphones, tablets, iPods (yes, Apple still produces them), smart watches and even headphones already run on chips with their own architecture. During a virtual presentation, we were shown how the MacBook Pro will work on the processor installed just in the new iPad Pro. What he saw could not but surprise, because any operation, be it surfing the Internet or processing a giant Photoshop file with dozens of layers and weighing hundreds of megabytes, was performed flawlessly. Inside the 2020 iPad Pro is the Apple A12Z Bionic processor with Neural Engine. In terms of power, it practically does not differ from the already very worthy A12X in the previous iPad Pro. Compared to “X”, the “Z” has an improved cooling system, and now it can work at peak load for a longer time. The heart of the A12Z Bionic is an 8-core GPU for the best graphics on mobile and beyond. Considering the imminent release of computers on their own chip, in the future we should expect the same processors in the iPad Pro series and the new MacBooks. so Apple will only confirm the iPad Pro’s status as “a computer that is not a computer”.

Updated camera system. In the new iPad Pro, Apple engineers not only added an ultra-wide-angle lens, as in the iPhone 11, but also equipped the system with a LIDAR sensor. Unlike ToF (Time of Flight) cameras used in most Android smartphones, the lidar system is needed to scan and measure space correctly. Thanks to such a sensor, you can make a kind of 3D models of rooms, objects, and also interact more actively with augmented reality: virtually try on furniture in a real apartment, play AR. Prior to this, AR in the iPhone was based only on images from cameras and information from sensors such as an accelerometer.

Convenient mechanism for unlocking and paying for purchases. We’re talking about Face ID. To unlock any new MacBook, you need to either enter the password, or use the Apple Watch connected to the shared iCloud (enough so that they are on your hand next to the gadget), or touch your finger to the TouchID scanner. With iPad Pro, everything is much easier: you just need to look at its screen. voila!. you are already starting to work with him. The same when paying for purchases online: double-tap the lock key and a gentle glance at the screen. paid!

Thought It is not only cooler than a laptop, but also more expensive. Is it justified?

For a combination of an iPad Pro 12.9 with 512 GB of memory without LTE, but with a Magic Keyboard (30,990 rubles), they ask 144,980 rubles, while a 13-inch Macbook Pro with 512 GB and a similarly powerful processor costs 139,990 rubles (MacBook Air is even cheaper. 119,990 rubles). Another thing is that the iPad Pro has a touch screen, and by purchasing an Apple Pencil (another 11,490 rubles), the number of use cases (including those described above) increases significantly. If we talk about mobility, the tablet will be much more compact than a laptop: it weighs a 12.9-inch iPad Pro 641 g (1241 g with a keyboard, which is already a lot), while a laptop weighs about 1.4 kg.

The lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack is hard to explain. In the iPhone, this at least justifies the moisture protection, in the iPad Pro, like any other iPad, it is not. Plus, if Apple wants Pros like those who do podcasts to use a tablet, they’ll still need a 3.5mm jack. You can solve the problem with a USB-C / 3.5 mm adapter for headphones (for 702 rubles!), But then it will take up the only charging port. Okay, you can also charge through the Magic Keyboard (if you have one), but it still looks very strange. All we wanted to do was connect our wired, but very high quality headphones directly to the tablet. It’s good that 3.5 mm has been left in laptops so far. The topic of adapters and accessories is generally a separate achievement of Tim Cook. It was he who removed 3.5 mm connectors from almost all the company’s devices and made us assemble chains of adapters after the single-port MacBook 12 was released. Under the philosophy of the world of the future and the rejection of wires, the company sells a 0.8 m long USB-C Thunderbolt 3 cable for 3,549 rubles a USB ‑ C adapter for reading SD ‑ cards for the same price and a USB ‑ C to USB adapter for 1820 rubles. Our all-time favorite USB-C digital AV multiport adapter costs £ 400, and it doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack. And yes, in the cheapest iPad mini, the 3.5 mm port was left, as in the iPad Air, but this is also a matter of time.

READ  HDMI does not work from laptop to TV

Another big point: iPad Pro is not a programming tool. You can trick a lot and use an SSH connection to develop on a remote system. It will not be possible to fully and seriously develop applications. iPad Pro is ideal for teaching Swift programming (specifically learning) using Swift Playgrounds. But no one says that this tablet should be able to do this. The heights of programming are understandable and not needed by every user who buys a MacBook Pro, so the iPad Pro will be an excellent working tool for them.

On iPad Pro, with or without a keyboard, you can do almost everything you did on a laptop, and even more if you take into account the presence of a camera. Another thing is that the touch screen and mobility of the iPad Pro significantly expand the already enormous possibilities. For example, I have no idea how you can live without the Apple Pencil. I completely ditched the MacBook for writing (like this one), surfing the internet, playing games (which, by the way, I never got very into), but I still used it for Photoshop. just a habit. In the iPad Pro keyboard, I occasionally had little trackpad of a modest size, but the initial inconveniences were easily compensated for by the tablet’s huge touchscreen display.

Which iPad Pro should you choose? With a large diagonal. if you plan to spend a lot of time with him and work “at the table”, and with less

Having passed the way from an “enlarged smartphone” (or even an iPod), the iPad has become not only an independent device, but also an alternative to the gadgets we are used to. The 2020 iPad Pro is also its most up-to-date device, as much this spring made us look differently at how we will now work.

The layout of the keys (especially in the version for the 12.9-inch tablet) is almost exactly the same as in the new MacBooks, and each button is made using the latest “scissor” technology, as it is called in Apple. it is more reliable than the previously used “butterfly” Five years ago, using a butterfly, Apple reduced the height of the buttons by 40%, but some users experienced sticky keys.

Test drive: can iPad Pro replace a laptop

Given: iPad Pro 2020, which comes in two sizes: 11 and 12.9 inches, for the 11-inch version without LTE and 128 GB storage up to 146,000 rubles for the 12.9-inch model with LTE and 1 TB of internal storage.

Thought He is very powerful

The same when paying for purchases online: double-tap the lock key and a gentle glance at the screen. paid!

Not without drawbacks

READ  Error 9 when restoring ipad

Another big point: iPad Pro is not a programming tool. You can trick a lot and use an SSH connection to develop on a remote system. It will not be possible to fully and seriously develop applications. iPad Pro is ideal for teaching Swift programming (specifically learning) using Swift Playgrounds. But no one says that this tablet should be able to do this. The heights of programming are understandable and not needed by every user who buys a MacBook Pro, so the iPad Pro will be an excellent working tool for them.

Forbes Life verdict

With a large diagonal. if you plan to spend a lot of time with him and work “at the table”, and with less. if travel is everything for you, and the “tablet” will be used mainly for the Internet, notes, sketches and videos. In any case, I would advise you to choose versions with LTE, today you can already make an E-SIM in addition to a physical “SIM” in order to consume the total Internet traffic with the main number. This will keep you connected and connected to public Wi-Fi. After all, this is the main concept of the iPad Pro. not to replace a laptop or computer, but, all other things being equal, to give additional freedom to the user without being tied to a place (and a device that aggravates a backpack or bag).

Having passed the way from an “enlarged smartphone” (or even an iPod), the iPad has become not only an independent device, but also an alternative to the gadgets we are used to. The 2020 iPad Pro is also its most up-to-date device, as much this spring made us look differently at how we will now work.

What I did with the iPad Pro 2018 these 6 weeks

The more I mastered iPadOS and studied its capabilities, the more interesting the challenge itself became. Let me remind you that I set myself the task of giving up the laptop as much as possible. Even the launch of the 16-inch MacBook Pro didn’t break motivation. Although your hands are itching to grasp properly for a full-fledged gaming test.

Little by little, from clumsy “poking” in Settings and lonely neat taps on the soft keyboard, I gradually moved on to confident, automated work with the tablet.

iPad Pro crashes and flies into the bag dozens of times a day, as soon as possible reliably prescribes on tables and laps, and the solution of work issues and tasks is perceived exclusively through the prism of iPadOS usage.

In short, I’m used to it

… Edit photo

Some of the photos in this article were taken with an iPhone 11 Pro. For example, this one. on his ultra-wide-angle camera.

We in the editorial office ourselves shoot with Sony A7s mirrorless cameras, our iPhones and in general with everything that is at hand. We edit the photos ourselves, on our own. Well, or how, more often by my forces and by the forces of editor-in-chief Mikk.

Every week we have to process 20-30 pieces of “RAW-ok”, and in busy weeks and under a hundred.

All this would have been easy, if not for one “but”: I am very busy with the completion of subject photos. I can sit on some for an hour until I feel like I’m starting to go crazy. I really do not trust algorithms and “lightrooms”, all kinds of batch processing. They will not remove dust, as well as various unpleasant imperfections of surfaces. I prefer the manual approach.

Everything is great on the iPad Pro and iPadOS side. Copying RAW to the tablet itself is nowhere easier: I directly connect the camera via the USB-C to micro-USB cable and upload the RAWs directly to the Camera Roll. Editing them is also convenient. Most often I use Photoshop Fix and Express, sometimes Lightroom for a change. Pixelmator didn’t work at all, and I haven’t tried the Photo version yet.

And it would be possible to end this if I just “rolled” the pictures through the auto-enhancers and left them like that. But with my stupid perfectionism, there is one thing badly missing from Adobe’s iPadOS tools. Not even two. And I have not yet found a good alternative for the package.

The first is the normal resize and export settings. There is a processed RAW photograph with an original resolution of 4000 pixels wide. And you need strictly 1240px. How to turn one into another, where is this menu? Everywhere I clicked and Google. He’s gone. How did it happen. I have to bother with a third-party program. Do not fill in the admin panel. JPEG for several “meters”, including the length. Then you will start kicking first.

The second thing is generally specific. This is just a story about “highly specialized scenarios”, or rather, formed habits. I really love (OK, adore) the Color Swap tool in full-fledged Photoshop. This is such a cheat for correcting yellowness and other mistakes when shooting, which, when used with tonal “brushes”, allows you to squeeze a commercial quality image out of a failed photo, wielding it “by eye”.

As you might guess, I have not yet found direct analogs to this tool on iPadOS. If you know, tell me.

The rest of the iPad Pro copes with photo editing with a bang. He chews RAW very quickly. You don’t need, say, Adobe Bridge to select 10 normal photos out of 100 bad RAWs: I flip through and mark the successful “Chosen” right in the Film, and then I ruthlessly erase the rest.

Over the course of 6 weeks, several reviews of mine and others were published with photographs that were processed in whole or in part on the iPad Pro. Just a little bit too short for me to call the tablet the perfect platform for professional-grade retouching. And I don’t know yet. maybe it’s the experience I’m missing, but the application or iPadOS has nothing to do with it.

Important: iPad Pro must be taken with a SIM card. This is a completely different gadget.

Before drawing a line over these lingering impressions, I want to give one last piece of advice. If you can, grab an iPad Pro with an LTE module. Roughly speaking, with a SIM card.

Complete independence from Wi-Fi turns an already powerful tablet into a versatile tool that can help out anywhere and in any situation. It is clear that you can always turn on the modem mode on the iPhone. but in Russia it is increasingly limited in speed, becomes a paid service, or is blocked by the operator altogether.

Unlimited tariffs for tablets are nowhere cheaper, and LTE speeds will give odds to any free “Wi-Fi”, and office “grids” too. You are always online and it is worth a lot.

create content for social networks

I really don’t like the word “content”. Anyway. IPad has the ability to awaken creativity in people who were originally predisposed to it. For some reason I decided that I also belong to such.

And so I was looking for photo editors for iPad once. One by one, I dived deeper and deeper until I came across three programs. These are Plotaverse, Enlight Pixaloop and Lumyer. I must say right away that the latter should not be installed, although it is useful, it does not support the Stories format for Instagram.

These programs allow you to create short animated videos for social networks and websites. The animations themselves are already ready, downloaded from a huge database and constantly updated. It remains only to transfer them to a static photo, twist, and, if desired, play with color and masks.

The result is very unusual. You should have already noticed it on iPhones.ru. I put a couple of such video pictures in my previous articles. But I also found guys who really need such mini-videos for commercial “instagram” and advertising in

In general, quite unexpectedly for myself, I began to earn extra money, making such simple animation videos for social networks. And the site also falls. Doing the same on the iPhone is not so convenient, physically there is not enough screen space.

Plus iPad Pro with its killer processor easily puts at least 10 simultaneous animations. I’m happy, the wallet is too, and I learned something new.

So here’s my iPad Pro 2018

11-inch version, 1 terabyte model with LTE modem. Space Gray. The 12.9-inch version is good in its own way, but for me it is not as versatile. Size matters both ways, all things.

Above, a complete set of all official Apple accessories: Smart Folio cover, Smart Keyboard Folio and Apple Pencil 2nd generation.

There is also glass, film, film for film. Well, a bag.

Just kidding about the latter. Well, partially. In the early days I thought of sticking at least something on top. It’s a pity to accidentally scratch it. Then common sense woke up. It became clear that the covers were more than enough for protection. And five layers of film won’t save you from crooked hands.

Both branded iPad Pro cases are magnetically attached to the tablet. Very comfortable and does not thicken the edges.

I decided to accelerate evenly, so I first rolled a backup from the iPhone. Then I downloaded all the applications. Then downloaded the entire Apple Music library. Next I downloaded all the Apple Arcade games. All episodes of all Apple TV series

Yes, 1 terabyte was too tough for me. After 6 weeks, 600-odd gigabytes remain free on the iPad Pro, and of course I have no words. A couple of years ago, I went with a 64 gigabyte iPhone X, and the freedom not to think about memory inspires, intoxicates.

The first three evenings passed for this pampering, after which the iPad really went into business.

use on the road and on trips

By the way, the red sports bracelet on Apple Watch Series 5 is a new thing, (PRODUCT) RED. The color is gorgeous.

If you followed the site, a couple of weeks ago I published my impressions of my trip to Amsterdam. I didn’t take the laptop there at all: only the iPad Pro with the Smart Keyboard Folio. It was unusual, after all, without a laptop. like without hands when you are responsible for a large website.

I can’t say that I used my iPad directly on the trip. After all, we didn’t work, but planned to have a rest. But on iPadOS, it was absolutely ordinary to “fill” the post, correct the texts, edit the photos taken in the same place.

On the plane, I finally watched several episodes of The Morning Show. Not even a few, but everything that came out at that time. The flight back and forth seemed to be absent altogether, I remember only took off, put the iPad on its knees. hop, three hours have already flown by, they ask to remove it on landing. And the charge was not spent so much, well, maybe 25-30 percent at high brightness and Bluetooth headphones.

The display is cool, the color reproduction and resolution are such that all the wrinkles on the main actors are considered. And in general, Aniston is doing well. Everyone should look and play like that at 50.

As a work and entertainment device, the iPad Pro fits perfectly into the trip and has proven that a business trip won’t get any worse without a laptop. Even if I had to work at the pace of everyday life, I would not be lost in Amsterdam.

Don’t forget that the whole sandwich is lightweight: 764 grams is even less than a 12-inch MacBook (920 grams). I was the only one who did not take a laptop with me, and therefore we distributed all the “excess” of my colleagues’ carry-on luggage into my half-empty backpack before departure.

The answer to the most important question

Could the iPad Pro replace the computer completely?

Yes. And no. Because he is not a computer. This is really a different device.

iPad Pro can help you do more than the most powerful computer ever could. Or, on the contrary, less. It all comes down to two things: the type of your workflow and the desire to change something in it.

If you are primarily working with text. an Apple tablet plus a branded keyboard cover will cover 99.5% of tasks, and for the remaining 0.5%, you can find clever ways to solve it. It took me 15 minutes to get used to the keyboard and a week to fit the tablet into the editorial process. And then I typed 5 thousand words of Airpods Pro review on it. Didn’t want to stop.

If you are retouching photos. it all comes down to how deeply you edit each frame. All the basic and even many advanced features, including direct RAW editing right from the camera, have been available on iPad Pro for a long time. But there is still no complete replacement for “desktop” Photoshop. The key word is for now. Work in progress.

So much power in less than half a MacBook Pro.

If you want to create, draw and generally develop your creative impulses into something tangible, then you will not find a better gadget than the iPad Pro. With Apple Pencil and Procreate from the App Store, you can compete with some of the world’s best digital artists. Not for nothing that many of them use this “combo”.

Well, if you just need entertainment. then the iPad Pro will easily reveal itself as an uber gadget. Retina display with stunning color reproduction in an ultra-thin body with killer quad-speakers and virtually leading processor and video chip power Honestly, even a year later it has virtually no competitors, and holding it all in your hands is a sheer geek pleasure.

Where the iPad Pro may not help you is in highly specialized scenarios. Let’s say your company uses some specially developed software for Windows 7 and is closed from the outside world by dozens of proprietary systems. The approach in this case is manual. Google, as others have done. It happens that a solution is found, and there is something suitable in the App Store. It happens that not.

As you can see, the iPad will be completely different for everyone, and its actual use will be just as different. By the way, it is interesting to collect stories from the owners of iPads. How do you use it? Those “highly specialized scenarios” are especially interesting. If you have something to share in this regard, write in the comments below or to [email protected], I will be grateful.

Anyway. Let’s move on to my own impressions. 6 weeks, iPad Pro 2018 from morning to evening and occasional breaks on MacBook.
